Thats how me and hatman done mine. In a driveway in 28 degrees.(poss less I couldnt feel it by the time we were done). I ground half the head off my pinch bolt. But I got it back in and everything worked out nicely. My diff was crunchy muddy inside, it looked like someone shoveled half the lakebed into it. The ujoints on the axleshafts were busted, the bearings were shot. And when I broke it open it was dry as a bone like yours. Make sure to run extended vent lines or youll end up doing it all again.
