The year and make of the truck is a 1993 with a 4.0 v6 with a five speed manual. Engine was swapped out about 15 years ago. We are assuming the swapped out engine is somewhere around a 1992. Truck is running but rough at highway speed and shows a code 33. With further investigation shows it is A EGR valve or a DPFE sensor problem, we also see that this engine does not have an EGR valve or DPFE sensor. My computer is trying to read something that is not there. The ECM is the original truck ECM. Any help appreciated!

Here's a old thread. https://www.therangerstation.com/forums/index.php?threads/egr-valve-or-not.145900/

I believe the consensus is you do not have a EGR. You must have the wrong computer in it to throw that code. I don't think any of this would have anything to do with your roughness problem. Having a EGR code will just make the computer retard the timing a little bit, nothing you would notice as roughness. I would look somewhere else for your problem.

I have found miss-fire at speed to usually be sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, distributor cap and or rotor. Something to do with the high voltage part of the ignition.

I got your message about something else being the issue about it running rough. Question I have if the computer is trying to read something that is not there and it is dumping extra fuel that to me you would make it stumble, What I am trying to figure out is there a way I can purchase a another ECM computer for the truck that would read this engine and talk to it the way it is supposed to. I am getting ready to put another set of plugs in it just to check to make sure they are all firing correctly now. One thing that I would like to get understood is the truck will run fine going down the road then all sudden the check engine light comes on the trucks moves out and runs terrific at that time with the check engine light on The harder you run the truck the better it seems to run it is aunt Lou speech shipping like 2nd to 3rd driving through town is where it wants to act up.

The computer not seeing the EGR valve would not cause it to run bad. But it would be prudent to see what computer you do have in there, if it's even close to the engine it's trying to run. Just get the numbers off of it. You can look them up on google or someone here may be able to help decode what you have.

You said it would be prudent to know what computer was in the truck. It is the original 1993 Ford Ranger XLT computer that has been in the truck since the truck was built from Ford. When I referred to running poorly or badly I am talking about it does not drive under normal conditions the harder you drive it like a dragster it was great, if you drive it as a normal driver it runs sluggish like the time is being retarded or the timing is being screwed with and it is dumping gas, I think I’m onto something I am going to give it a try I got a diagram of the ECM and the pin number for the EGR valve I am going to try to take a 3 V capacitor and put it in line to pull the ECM that the DPF the sensor is working properly.
