93' Engine Overheats in traffic

Hey all.

My ranger has been over heating lately. I just replaced the radiator and it no longer heats up at moving speeds. I put in a double row radiator and it stays right at the N in Normal on the gauge.

With that being said as soon as I hit traffic the engine starts to warm up and eventually if its really stop and go I'll get all the way out of the normal range.

So I've replaced the Thermostat, Radiator, I have new hoses coming as well.

I'm now wondering if I need to go after the fan clutch or the water pump.

I had the water pump replaced about 2 years ago when i got my head gaskets re-done.

Can a fan clutch really cause this?

The fan is always on when I start the truck and it doesnt feel any different whether the engine is cold or hot and i cant stop the fan with news paper.

Can anyone give me some direction?

Yes, replace fan clutch

Classic symptom of failing fan clutch is rising engine temp when stopped or driving slowly, this is the only time fan is actually used.

When driving at speed airflow thru rad is higher than any fan could provide.

Fan shroud is also important, a must have to get good cooling when stopped
