Alright fellas, the time is getting closer to doing my swap. I've got a 93 splash reg cab 3.0 5 spd 4x4, i've got a parts truck which is a 93 reg cab, 4.0 5spd 4x4. I just wanted to post here and make sure i know what i need and dont need. I know i need the engine, and the engine harness itself and the computer. i looked at the 2 main plugs that the engine harness plugs into on both trucks and they are identical, also looked at the fuse box under the hood and all the fuses are in the exact same spot on both trucks. My question is am i going to need any other wiring from the truck? To me it looks like a direct swap in, plug and play. I'm going to use the 4.0 motor mounts, engine tranny(tranny needs a slave cylinder and clutch), 4.0 computer and use my t-case and save the other for a spare. Are the slave cylinders in the trannies the exact same? if so that will save mesome cash there. just lemme know if i've got everything correct before i dive into it. Oh and yes im going to use the 4.0 rad as well.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

thanks,

You DO need to swap the entire hrnes from the 4.0 donor vehicle.

this is because the EDIS system is NOT part of the "engine" harness
but is instead installed in the "main" harness.

EDIS? Electronic Distributorless Ignition System.

i don't know if the slave cylinders are the same but imo you should put a new slave cylinder in it while its apart

So i need to get the entire wiring harness, as in including the under the dash harness? If so, how hard is it to get everything out? I've done this with a fox body stang before, but never a ranger.

if you make sure the pin out of the firewall plug is the same(or remove the keeper and swap pins around) you won't need to take the dash apart and change its harness but you'll need everything else. that was easy to do on my 91-92 combo with EVTM's from e-bay

AD said that the EDIS wasnt part of my 3.0's wiring harness, but i have heard of some people saying they just plugged and played, i'll have to look at the computer plug in as well and see, and if worse comes to worse, like i throw the engine and everything in and it doesnt fire,i'll know for sure i need to swap out the dash harness. Just trying to make sure i know what all to grab, because once the motor is out, the rest of the truck is off to the scrap yard(probably yank both axles as well before it goes).

does your truck have a distributor? even if it doesn't you probably will need all of the engine bay harnesses for "plug and play". my remarks are solely about the dash harness.

oh yeah i forgot, allen is more knowledgeable than most EVERYONE you will get advise from, you'd be well advised to just do as he says.

lol, i know better than to not listen to AD, i've seen some of his posts, and it is definately wise to listen to what he has to say. Also, my truck has a dist., i believe 95 is when the 3.0 went to coil packs.

Alright, i got the entire harness in dash and under the hood. i'm not uite sure if i need the dist, box on the fender as every single fuse is in the exact same spot on my ranger. Getting that dash out was a PITA since i have never removed a dash from a ranger before. Thought i had it once i removed the bolts up top and the couple on the bottom, then i had to get the 2 screws that held the main harness in behind the gauges, then i had another one just behind the radio, then i had to remove the couple holding in some kind of electronic boxes from right beside the air control unit. THEN i finally removed the entire dash lol. What exactly does the EDIS part look like? is it one or both of the electronic boxes under the dash? or was it the little black box screwed into the front core support beside the drivers side headlight?

Plenty of people (including me and Rick) have swapped 4.0s in place of distrubtor engines (2.9 and 3.0) without swapping the dash/entire harness, I'm not sure what AD is talking about. And as said above, even if the slaves are the same, DONT reuse a slave, you're asking for failure.

I will probably go ahead and change the slave out while i got the 4.0 out of the truck, also goin to get a new clutch for it as well, if i remember i think you can get a ford racing one and slave cylinder combo, cant remember, its been awhile. As far as the harness goes, I think i will just drop the 4.0 and everything in there, swap out the computers and plug the engine harness into the main harness and see if she runs, if not, i know i need to swap something.

Both being 93s, I wouldn't doubt that it would fire right up.

its the small black flat box on the core support.use all the wiring under the hood(with the fuse box and cpu plug in) and match up the wires going into the firewall on the driver side.its only three harnesses and its easy.

ahh ok, so it goes in the spot where my tfi module currently is located, gotcha. Now what do you mean about matching the wires going into the firewall? i thought it only connected 1 way.

you need to make sure the wires are in the same place in the plug so you don't fry something.if the trucks are optioned different its likely they aren't in the same spot(they have different motors i wouldn't be surprised if there was a difference).remove the keeper in the plug and you can move them around.look at my swap thread you'll see how i verified them- http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6522
