I have a 92 Ranger 4x4, with the a4ld. I bought it from a friend because the tranny went out in it. I have searched this forum alot and have seen the a4ld's pretty much stink. Now for my question, how hard is it to swap the a4ld for a 5-speed? I know i need the pedals, clutch, driveshafts, pressure plate, clutch lines, etc. I'm just wondering how DIFFICULT is all this to do. I've talked to guys that did the swap on 2wd, but mines a 4wd, whats involved? any personal experience would be helpful.

Well, It is not hard for ME to do. A bit time consuming.
If you are pulling the donor trans, you can pull the clutch master out of the firewall and leave it connected to the trans while you swap it. You'll be happy you did. I gets in the way a little but, Is much easier than getting the air out if you disconnect it.
The A4LD and the M5OD-R1 use the same driveshafts. The transfer case is the same but, yours is probably electronic shift and the one from behind the manual trans may be the preferred manual shift.
You will have to pull back the carpet or just cut a hole and hope you are close. There is a bolt in panel in the floor for the shifter and boot.
I also suggest the bigger 4.0 flywheel, pressure plate, clutch and starter.

Would it just be easier getting a 4.0 5-speed?

alrighty thanks alot then
my dad wanted to know what trans i wanted for christmas haha

the shifters and metal floor plate can come out of a 91-94 sploder as well as rangers, but not sure about the pedals.

The pedal assembly and floor plate can come out of any '89-'92 Ranger, '91-'94 Explorer, or '89-'90 Bronco II.

The 3 swaps I have done, it took an average of 8-9 hours to do each one.

rangers have a different bracket for the pedal assmbly then an explorer

i have found rangers have one mounting bolt to the fire wall at the top of the bracket where explorers have two bolts
