89 ranger SAS build

a 2.9 isnt that bad.....for a bronco 2......not hauling anything............with stock tires.........driving only on the highway.

but if you're gonna spend all that time ripping out an engine and putting a new one in, you could just as easily put a 4.0 in there.

the downside to that is that you'd eventually need a new tranny (if the old one even bolts up). plus, a good 4.0 will probably run you more than $200

I think this is one time I'd spend the money and not take the cheap way out. The 4.0 is awesome

As far as swapping trannies, dont have to. Just switch out the bellhousings and you should be good depending if thr 2.9 has an auto or manual tranny. If auto then look for a manual 2.9 bellhousing and clutch set-up along wioth there flywheel.

found out that it is an STX with auto trans and manual tcase. got pictures of it emailed to me, the body is in better shape than mine.. at least it doesnt have guard rail creases down the passenger side.

also it was a typo, supposed to be $1200. Anyway i think i will keep looking for an explorer.

anyone know if the 95+ explorers wireing will be a plug and play with my truck?

They m50 trans have an integrated bellhousing. The TK4/5 and FM145/146 have removable housings....:icon_thumby:

I might just go with an automatic if I need to. That way my wife can drive it

swap in the 4 liter. not sure where they crammed the computer and other thing's on your truck but make sure you pick a donor wisely. as i have come to find out swappin everything from a 94 ranger into a carbed B2 was not a good choice. if we woulda picked up an explorer instead of the ranger we would have been done 4 time's over by now.

Forgot about theose trannies having those bellhousings. Does your wife really need to be able to drive your truck or not, not saying that its bad or anything. My stepmom cant hop into mine so thats one person I have kept out of it, she drives vehicles like shes going for the pole at the Indy 500. Also if a woman cant get into the truck, she doesnt come home with me, basiclly thats the first test and a joke too. If you have to do an engione swap either kep it 2.3 or go all th way and go 4.0. But going 4.0, you may have to go with different gears in your diffs. too, not sure on that though.

the gears should be ok. They are about the same as stock with 4.56 and 35's
If i get an automatic thats cool, same with a manual.

The 2.9 M5OD will bolt up to the 4.0 engine. If you're sticking with a 89-94 RBV power train then I wouldn't consider swapping in an automatic since you're going to be wheeling your truck they aren't built well enough to handle alot of stress from wheeling.

I really don't want an auto, but if the price is right....

an auto behind the 4 cyl will prolly amplify the lack of power

Found a truck on CL for $CHEAP was rolled but its a 95 4.0 manual 2wd. Seen it today and runs very good. Was well maintained, has new clutch and recent tuneup. Has 100,087 miles on it..

My question is, would the wireing harness be compatible with my 89??? I need to let the guy know ASAP if I want it..

Your going to have to swap the wiring harnesses no questions asked on that. You should be fine on the fuel delivery too.

Buy the truck take everything you can from it and sell the rest for scrap or parts. If its a cheap as you are saying it is, I would do it.
