Hey im swapping a 302 into my 89 ranger. I was looking at a adapter plate but they dont make any for my transmission. But i did find a 89 4 speed 4 wheel drive tranny will that work with my truck? And if so can I use my transfer case? Do I have to shorten my driveshafts? How much mods do i have to do? Anything will help thanks

I'm 2WD, using an AOD. The stock drive shaft mounted up - for me. Obviously, some of the things we are doing are different, but maybe the idea of relocating the the tranny crossmember will work for you.

Not sure from your post but you not thinking about using a stock Ranger trans behind the V-8 are you? Little more detail about which trans you found to use.

Oh sorry its a 89 ford f 150 tranny.

oooooooooooooo:icon_thumby:, those are tough transmissions. The old timers call those "Rock Crushers" because they can take the abuse of off-roading very well without a problem. The only downside is that they aren't fuel efficient(4 speeds).

It should fit into space alotted on a ranger, they are about the same size as a T-5, but will it bolt up to your TC? I have no idea. Mine's only a 2wd, so I'm not knowledged in 4X4.

Ok thanks for the info. It is the 4 speed with the overdrive im tryin to do the least mods but have a good transmisson. My buddy had the same tranny in his truck and we put it though hell, so i know the rockcrusher is a strong tranny. But it was not in a ranger. I did do some research and i guess i can do it. it is a little longer so i might have to get a diffrent driveshaft.

Actually the term "Rock Crusher" was what the Muncie M-22 used in Chebys was called. You must be thinking of the equally or stronger Top Loader Ford trans. Mid 70's they did change it over to have a .78 OD but also switched to an aluminum case that made it weaker. F-150 should have come with the M5R2. I'd just grab the x-fer case from it and modify the drive shafts to suit.
Hope this helps, yes, I'm an "old timer" and glad I made it this far.
