89 Ranger 2.9 auto won't rev past 1500 when warm

Dugan,

Exchange your fuel pump relay with another relay of the same type. If the relay has burnt contacts you'll get some voltage drop off at random times as the contacts arc a bit. That will cause the fuel pump not to receive correct voltage.

Another possible issue I've seen with our BII. The fuel injectors where so badly bunged up with rust and &hit the engine would run fair...and then like it was dogging out. I pulled the fuel rail off, flipped it upside down...and just (With this thing wrapped in a cloth) kicked the key on to off JUST TO RUN THE FUEL PUMP!) And found 2 injectors drooling badly...That prompted me to pull them all, and the fuel socks where totally clogged with rust and crap. I replaced the two that where leaking, and "rebuilt" the other 4. New o-rings and new mesh "socks" at the inlet. I also hooked up a small 12volt dc pulse/switched power supply to each one. I used it to kick the valve open, and reverse flushed it out with carb cleaner. I also used several cans of carb cleaner to flush out the inside if the fuel intake rail. Totally disgusting. It's been over 2 years sense--and it's holding up fairly well.

Just a couple ideas. Not saying it's a cure all for this issue. But what the heck...

Dam, I forgot to update this thread.... sorry !

OK, TPS, new engine, all sensors from old engine, the old engine had gone through everything being changed out except TPS and MAP, so, the next logical sensor change was the TPS.

Sputtering, and crap gone, BUT......

engine still "learns" to be stupid over 2-3 weeks, stupid, NOT sputtering.

when I say learns, a fresh code cleaning and the engine has a lot of power, reasonable fuel economy, as the weeks pass, the power goes, but the fuel economy is about the same, it's like the engine "gets stupid", simply do a KOER test, and pull the jumper while the engine is running (this clears the computer of the "learned" settings), and the engine has power again, and same fuel economy.

This is NOT the motorboating problem I had before, so I would assume the fuel tank sock, and the TPS fixed that, and since there is only one sensor left to try (other than the computer itself) the sensor (MAP) or computer will fix the "getting stupid" thing.

When I think about it, the MAP would make sense as to the getting stupid thing, if the reading is dumb, so once the 3rd transmission is back in, I'll simply pull the map, and plug the manifold port, and see what happens.

this should be done within the next week or so, only because I have a heating boiler on the shop that is getting some welding done on it, and should be finished in a couple of days.

It could be simple such as the TPI. The accelerato cable opens the butterfly valve in the intake but doesn't control the fuel. The Throttle Position Indicator tells the ECC how wide open the valve is and adjusts the fuel accordingly. Upt to 1500 (when cold) the Engine coolant sensor controls the Idle Air Control. Anything above that is controlled through the TPI. It only cost about $40. I had to change mine about 8 months ago.

I seem to be having the same problem, tps is new, TFI tested good about 8 times in a row, new ECT and the map is still good (in that i unplugged it while it was running and it died), fpr has about 700 miles on it, hp fuel pump is getting loud when priming and running,

What color are the connectors for each relay, i have a green, a brown, and a black connector on the passenger side fender.
