89 ranger 2.3 5spd.just did valve job/headgasket due to blown head gasket.truck cranked up and idled good after the job was finished.no tags/insurance so cant drive it far. cranked it up tonight and it was idleing rough and trying to quit.wouldnt let me rev past 2000 rpms.unplugged the iac and it idles good and you can rev the motor.drive it down the road and it misses so bad under acceleration you can barely drive it. any ideas? bad sensors? no engine light. please help before i junk this truck or put a damn v8 in it:annoyed:
 
If you live closer i would just take it off your hands! Haha, try an oxygen sensor, i had issues with mine running bad and that took care of it. On the other hand, i am not sure why it would run better with the IAC unhooked.
 
I can't explain the IAC either, but I'd still throw an O2 sensor at it. Blown head gaskets put coolant in the exhaust, coolant is not good for O2 sensors.
 
wouldnt an o2 sensor kick on the check engine light?:icon_confused: i am going to try one any way just because i dont think it has ever been changed.would a tps cause this? i am about to give up on this truck and just find my son a different truck. i think i may have bought someone elses problems:bawling:
 
O2 should definitely throw a code. And if the O2 was really bad, you would see issues. I had a Ranger with a bad O2. It ran pig rich and was smoking like crazy; black.
 
o2 sensors dont always throw codes if they arent completely shot. It could be an issue, but its still wierd to me that you have an improvement with the IAC unhooked.
 
O2 sensors are voltaic, they generate voltage. The parameters for an O2 sensor gives them a range in which the computer is expecting voltage to be within. If an O2 sensor was off enough to cause a badly running engine, that sensor would be out of range and it would indeed throw a code because of it. If it was just inaccurate, but within range, no code. But then it wouldn't have caused a running condition the OP describes.

going to put a tps on it tomorrow.pulled the throttle body off and it was nasty.figurted for 12.00 i would go ahead and replace the tps.let yall know if it helps after i do it:icon_thumby:

Anyway, a TPS can be tested with a voltmeter . . it's very easy to do.

didnt help.new iac solved weird idle issues.still missing bad under load.out of curiosity i checked my fuel pressure.manual says should be 40psi key on engine off.mine is 35.once cranked drops to 28.seems a bit low.shut the truck off and the gauge drops to @20. wondering if i have leaking injectors.new fuel pump and regulator already because truck sat for awhile.also new fuel filter
 
At idle pressure should be in the low 30s. Pull the vacuum hose off of the regulator and it should go up to about 42. If it does this, you are fine.
 
pulled line off regulator and pressure went from 28 psi to 38 psi according to my gauge which could be out of calibration.so this means the new regulator is good but does it mean anything as far as the injectors?this is such a pain in the ass. the truck idles perfect all the time,no smoke,but as soon as you try to accelerate under load it misses so bad you cant drive it:icon_confused:may try to pull the spark plugs and make sure one isnt cracked.checked my firing order and it is good
