Hey guys, picked up and 89 ranger with what he called a "starter misalignment issue" but these aren't shimmed or anything so I figured it might have just had a bad starter, I had an almost new one sitting around so I figured I'd Throw it in and it would start, be happy, and be on it's way, not the case.

New stater in and it grinds awfully, sounds like rocks in a blender. Looking at it, it appears to have a different flywheel then it's supposed to. The clutch has been replaced very recently it appears as well.

You can see the teeth from the inspection port in the side of the transmission (unlike my 4.0) so I don't believe it's been 4.0 clutch swapped, but I don't know what starter to get or if im completely missing something.. any help would be great guy.

New starter bolted up, notice the difference in teeth spacing/size?

For reference this is what you see looking at a 4.0 from the viewport

Gonna old school shim the starter and see if it's gonna work or not

Shimming it might solve the problem. On my 2.9 with the A4LD I believe the metal shroud/cover thing in the first picture covers around the starter hole as well. It almost looks like yours was cut there.

I believe you are missing a large chunk of the spacer plate that goes between the engine and transmission and does act like a shim. I hate to say this but you should definitely find a spacer plate that hasn't been cut, don't be tempted to use washers to space it out, it won't ever be seated correctly.

is it the camera angle or is the clutch housing on crooked as hell?

edit: I should have said pressure plate assembly instead of clutch housing

The clutch housing? The clutch is fine, must me the camera angle

I would measure the thickness of the spacer plate. Then make a template of the area that is missing and cut it out on the plate. If you use some greese on the surfaces it will help it stay in place while you install the starter

That would be fine for a temporary fix, but that hole in the plate fixes the starter into the correct position for the teeth to engage.
