I was curious how much HP can the stock rear end on the 88 ranger v6 auto handle?

Is it a fresh rear gear? And do you mean for drag racing? Off road racing? If it gets really abused it won't last long with decent power like --300+ hp. A stock V8 will be ok for an 8.8 rear end for a dd and off roading fun. It would be best to put in a 9 inch and enjoy real hp if that is what you are wanting to do. Or....don't worry about it until it blows!!!

Yeah its got plenty of miles on it. im going for Super Street build so your right im gonna go with the 9in rear. Do you know where I can find a 9in? Also my ranger is a 83 I just had some 88 parts laying around.

Do you mean an '88 Ranger or a Ranger 8.8?

it was an 88 ranger. but im gonna go with a 9in rear in my 83 ranger I just need to kniw where to buy a complete one.

So it was a 7.5.

And...Who's on first??....lol...I got confused on this!!!!

You got confused because half the time this "88" is how people write "8.8"... Thats why I asked.

Best to check on CL or E-Bay, probably hard to find any more in JY's. Most 9" rears are too wide and only have the 28 spline axles, not much improvement over the common 8.8 found under Rangers. Good 9" ones with the 31 spline get expensive. Good list of different axles widths is found here, the ones closest are the 66 Mustang ones. I did find a narrowed 31 spline under a Pinto but that is a long story.

Just go for an explorer 8.8" axle, will be plenty strong for pretty much whatever you put to it on a street truck (shy of a big block or big racing slicks...), they're super easy to find...
