88 Ranger Rear Axle / Drum Wet, fluid on ground

There's no evidence anything under your truck is leaking.

The integrity of everything under your truck is 100% solid and resolute; these unfounded and preposterous claims of leaks are utterly ridiculous and should not be taken seriously.

No legitimate source has reported a single instance of anything leaking under your truck.

Your truck has categorically refuted any and all claims of leaks.

Its all a vast right-wing conspiracy.

Right now is a time for healing and unity. All you are accomplishing with these false accusations of leaks is dividing the forum further and further.

Your conspiracy theories are bad for democracy.

Not in the least. The media already called this one for "not leaking."

The media is God.

If they say it on CNN or in the Washington Post, it automatically becomes true.

Both cited this axle as definitively not leaking.

Therefore, there is no leak.

"Alternative" media has been fabricating conspiracy theories about this non-existent leak. This is conservative misinformation, and is not to be taken as fact or even considered to be rooted in fact.

Now, please move aside and allow the State's Axle Leak Certification Board certify this axle as non leaking, so that the electors may cast their votes as non leaking.

Who is Jack Dorsey?

Is he that guy from 24?

Hey ya'll - okay, the plot thickens. I took the drums apart, took the cylinder off, only to find that the replacement part didn't fit. Fits in the hole but the brake line is about 1/4" too short, and the threads are too small as well. So i ran to advance auto parts, picked up the one they had in stock, and that the holes don't even line up for the two bolts that secure the cylinder. I'm frustrated af.

It’s so hard to get good help.

I’ve run across that problem with u-joints in the past. Take the old cylinder with you to compare parts. If they don’t have the right part, time to try another parts store.

Here's a pic of my current wheel cylinder. It seems to have this little nut that extends out just enough for the hard brake line to reach it. When i google 1988 Ranger Wheels Cylinder, none of the images that show up seem to match this style. Pretty confused! Any help appreciated!

There is an error in their catalog.

You have 9 inch drums, they gave you parts for later 10 inch drums.

The first one i got i specified 9. I have a feeling somethin weird is goin on under there. Maybe be better off just getting a whole drum replacement kit so it’s all cohesive.

I have not seen that thread adapter used before. I'm guessing that's some genius' handiwork. Perhaps the fitting on the brake line was damaged and replaced previously and the new one didn't have the right fitting, hence the adapter.

Usually if you've got smooth drums, they are 10", ones with find are 9".

Had a thought: Might I be able to just replace the internal pistons in my old cylinder with the new pistons from the new part?

Maybe. Maybe not. First off, they gave you the wrong part. So the internal cylinder may be a totally different size or design. Second, even if it was the right nominal diameter, if it’s a different manufacturer, the tolerances could be off just enough to make it too tight or too lose in your old worn cylinder. Shouldn’t but could. Personally, I would take the wrong part back. Then go somewhere else and get the right part. This is safety equipment, after all.

The bore might be scratched as well. Used to be, you could get kits to re-hone it (maybe still can) but I'd be of the opinion that starting over with a fresh part is the thing to do.

If you hone it, and it still leaks, then you're back to square one with time and money spent that you can't get back.
