'88 2.9 won't Idle after stereo install

my 2.9 idled at 500-600 in gear, about 750 in park... then i replaced it w/ the 4.0..

i say the alt is bad to. go to autozone and have them check it. should be able to do it w/ it mounted to the truck. seriously, go... have them test it.

Well, I guess I'll go have it tested then. I just don't want to spend money and time replacing something (especially if I'm modding a different alt into it), just for it to be something else. I don't understand why installing the stereo would all the sudden cause it to crap out, and still have the symptoms with the stereo pulled out. I'll check it out though and post back with you guys.

Also, I meant that it is at 900 RPM cold, at first start up. At operating temperature my truck usually sits perfectly at 800. As of now, it idles at 500 for a few seconds before it stalls.

After you have the alternator tested clean your IAC motor.

Like I said, the IAC is almost brand new, no way it should be that bad already. Besides, it tries to keep the truck going, it just can't

we can't help ya until you get the alt. tested.

Wont test the alternator, wont check/clean the IAC ?

Wish ya' luck then homey.

It's not that I won't, it's that I work 6 days a week and I don't have a whole lot of time to limp my truck across the city to an Autozone to have the Alt tested. I have a few hours before work tomorrow to take it to have it tested, I'll check the IAC as well. Don't mistake me giving information for refusal to accept suggestions. I'm just trying to help narrow down possibilities.

I have the same thing as Disturbed...88 2.9 and headlights dim at idle and really love to upgrade to 3G with no money...What year Taurus for that 3G alt?

You can test your alternator with nothing more then a voltmeter if you have one.
Have you checked your plugs, wires, fuel filter... etc etc etc out yet ?
Checked fuel pressure ?

Ok everyone, it's fixed. Alt tested fine. IAC was working (or trying to, at least) correctly. Fuel is good. I checked everything I could think of, everything you all suggested, and everything in between. I couldn't find anything, so I took it to a shop where my dad used to take it when it was his. They had it for about 4 hours, and found about as much as I did... until the tech noticed a loose screw. Tightened it, and now it runs fine. When I went in to pick it up, that particular tech had left, so I have no idea what screw. He just said it was on the throttle body, and it isn't the TPS adjust screw that you might be thinking of. Weird? Yes. Confusing? Yes. But whatever screw that was, it fixed it. It's been back to it's normal self all day.

So, I appreciate the time and help guys, but I guess this ended up being one of those freak things that you have to get lucky to catch.

Glad to hear it's fixed. Now re-install your new stereo, and enjoy some good tunes!
