87 single cab SAS build

Is this on an aftermarket gauge?

It is but I just went a bought a electronic autometer guage to replace it the one that's in it is the "mechanical" one thought I had was maybe it's gettin air somewhere:icon_confused:

i run mine at 210-215 degrees with efi.

i guess with a carb 190-200 would be ok...but i would still tune it for over 200 degrees.

That's hot imo and my 302 is from the 70s but anyway I'll keep that in mind when its sitting it'll hit 230 and I have to shut it down if I do t catch it In time I like around 185 190 but that might b too cool as as well

i quit having any issues when running the summit style radiators-25x19 and taurus type fans.

and that was in trucks that make serious hp.

stock 70's engines are pretty weak. of course if you have all aftermarket stuff on it i would not call it a 70's engine. so cooling issues your describing need specific details to what you have to work with.

I'm not quite sure what year but when I buy parts for it I go with 1977 and they all have fit but as far as I know its stock its got a elbrock 4b wiend 4b intake hei dis I bought a 22 x19 summit rad aluminum dual core

I'll have to date it and yeah it doesn't make much power but the little bit I have driven it it does fine for what I need untill its replacement shows up

I am ashamed to say I haven't got any more work done on the truck since my last post :(....but I am going to try for today and see what shakes lose with any luck should b driving it home today also you guys were saying not to fawk with 20psi oil pressure what's it gonna hurt if I put a new pump in it

Got some work done this weekend got the radiator in and new oil pressure guage in holding at 25psi the other guage was crap still overheats at a stand still but cools down when driving so I was able to drive it home time to get back to working on it and for those of you wondering when the sas is coming its not out of the picture yet just gotta get the moneys back up again. Sell some more stuff but finally got the thing back to my shop :headbang:

dont get in too big a hurry. get it when ya get it.

For sure I have most of the stuff I need I think I can still use the stock 78 radius arms and 7* c bushings just won't have as much flex I'm mostly doing it so it might have a chance at driving straight lol but before the sas comes in I want all the other little things worked out like set my seats up stuff like that. that are cheapish then focus back on the swap I drew up a design for my center console moving my radio and cb down there and get some cup holders to was at the jusck yard pulled some speaker boxes out of a 2nd gen that mount behind the seats in useable condition little paint good as new I'll post that all up when I get it together also I need to make a fan shroud for it and maybe move the radiator up more too solving the over heating prob is high on the list

So I got bored decieded to post up my to do list I try to keep them short makes me feel more accomplished lol but any way

1 finish my guage setup
2 build center console
3 solve overheating problem
4 take truck to trans shop to make sure the TV cable is set right.

Thats what I'm focused on right now obviously the overall list is good sized but I get overwhelmed and lose interest quickly when. Looking that big lol I'll take a little win when I can

So I got my guages hooked up and I wired the backlights to the existing dash lights so I can dim them too it works but when I dim it. It changes the volt meter reading to like nothing and drops my electronic oil pressure guage reading.

But when I shut my lights off and watch the guages they read right so not sure what's up there:icon_confused:

The other thing that I really need sorted out is my over heating prob I don't have a shroud and I'll probably have to make one anyway if have to. If anyone has any input on this at all please feel free to jump it I'm not sure there's enough room between the water pump pully and rad to fit a electric fan set up I hear something about Taurus fans but not sure if its a brand or the actual fan out of the car I'd like to keep mechanical fan but if it cant be I'm not heart broken.:icon_pepsi:

How much room is there between the fan and radiator? I was doing some measuring and I believe I only have about 1.5" I put a pusher fan off a v10 Jaguar in front of my radiator. I haven't gotten a fan relay kit for it so I'm not sure how well it works.

I believe the Taurus fan (off a Ford tortoise LOL) was about 3.5" wide.

I prefer mechanical fans over electric.

Not sure right now I'll take a measurement after work tomorrow and me too I might root round the local junkyard for a nice big fan and I have a book on how to rebuild small blocks and it has a section on how to choose the right fan I just remembered that I'll read it and try to sum it up best I can and post that up too for future use of others as well

So the book wasn't any help I can post up what it said if anyone is interested but had an idea may just be able to grab a really big shroud off of a whatever and cut it to fit and maybe a different fan if anyone is running a mechanical fan please post up pics of your setup I'd appreciate it let me know how yours works out hagan
