87 ranger 4.0 swap

Good work. Still going on my 4.0 swap but I'm barely motivated anymore. Doing the dash swap makes the wiring aspect easier but the dash swap is a bigger PITA for most. Personally, I prefer the newer dash but not enough to swap it into the 88 & older trucks. Having a complete parts truck gets all the crap that 2 bits you to death during swaps.
Great job finding a free Explorer and yeah, great writeup.

Ain't that the truth! I spent $400 on my engine and $600 on the parts to put it in. All at the same salvage yard.

Heh, I piece-mealed mine too. By the time all was said and done (which it isn't yet) I ended up with 3 engine harnesses, two computers, 3 extra days of wire work, and the truck has been driving for 5 months and I'm still trying to collect pieces I need to finish this swap.

Got some more work in today! Got the motor out and the dash out and tomorrow will be getting the rest of interior and front clip off. Sorry guys i decided to swap dashes.. I could never get ahold of someone to help repin or splice for the 4.0.

I could help with that.

Most of it is straight forward. I'd do it for you if you were close enough, ,but the lack of snow in your pics tells me you aren't.

Picked up the explorer for free then i have to got to pull and save and grab an alternator, starter, y-pipe, maf, and egr pressure feedback sensor. Should cost me $100 max. But ill get that out of parting the rest of the explorer out!

Its alright, ive already dug into the explorer and got the dash and everything out and ready to go in. Endined up cutting out the ranger dash too so its unusable. Hha

:worthless:

Any more progress today?

Ive done a ton since the last update. Ill have to get pics tomorrow. I didnt do much today except take off my valve covers and do a small inspection of the 4.0. Looks good my girlfriend had surgery today so its getting put off for a while since she thinks shes more important than my build. :icon_rofl:

I'm having a snow day. Don't want one, want to keep going. I lose motivation pretty easily. :(

Now that you mention it, that does kinda sound like Vancouver. I get to work in the great (cold, wet) outdoors so I'm picky as to when I turn wrenches. I did get the new (old!) grille in mine last night just as snow started falling. That made me put a few bolts back in the fender, it can wait.

I decided to go outisde and put my time to use (it hadnt been snowing yet) so i started takin the doors and all the removable metal off the explorer, i got outside got the passenger fender off and it started snowing.. I still managed to work through it and get all the doors and back latch and all the other metal off tho! Goes to scrap in the morning! :yahoo:

What all did you keep for the swap? And why are you keeping the exploder doors? :icon_confused:

Im not, im taking them to scrap. and for the things im keeping are:
-seats
-center console
-ALL the wiring
-dash
-motor
-steering column
-radiator
-fuel lines and sending units
and basically everything in the engine bay.
