k, heres the situation, i got no brakes and im starting to think my master cylinder went out. So im going to the wreckers tomorrow to get another. what years of master cylinders will interchange with my 87 manual brakes? will a power brake MC work, or ones off a different model? what about different years? manual brake rangers are rare around here so it looks like im gona have to interchange..

no, a power brake m/c will not work, you can swap though, you're going to need the m/c, booster, and pedal assembly (the pivot pin is in a different spot)

uh oh, what year stoped using manual brakes?

They all stopped using manual brakes...when they were working...:)

I think it was an option...or a base model...not a specific year...I've seen a few in the junkyards when I was looking for a booster and thought "why would they not want a booster?"...but that was years ago and I haven't seen one in a long time...

You may need to look for remanufactured masters instead of the junkyard...many wreckers are dumping anything older than 98 (in Canada) so it may make the pickings even slimmer...but call around...they are not that expensive remanufactured...NAPA would be the best place...they seem to have many things others don't carry...

EDIT: Oh, and I think 87 was the last year a booster was not standard equipment...the only ones I saw were in early 80's...and usually the firewall was crusty...

haven't seen one of them In a while. i did drive a 90 somethin ranger in shop class a few years ago that didn't have power steering though...

hmm, think gen2-3 fleet models may have them? what about other makes, like off an S-10 or datsun. will one that bolts on work? or are power brakes different internally that manual brakes? im realy trying to avoid spending money on a remanned one if i dont have too.

tomorow i'll be taking my old MC to town to compare too and see what i can find.

So get a rebuild kit for your current unit. It's not hard to rebuild a brake master.

Last time I bought a reman unit it was only about $30 though.

thought about it, but id rather have something tommorow as i can get a ride to town and i know autozone/NAPA/oriley would have to special order a rebuild kit. plus the place my ride is going is the scrappers which is right next to a salvage yard.

now, what do i need to know in order to find something that fits?
ranger w/ man brakes bore is 15/16s
primary port - 3/8
secondary port - 1/2

if i find something like that that bolts on would it work? is a 1inch bore close enough?

i think i found something
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/pa...045_0_3912,7735&vehicleIdForService=190001904

1979 ford granada 250 I6 W/ power brakes

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/pa...8kn47?counter=1&itemIdentifier=39299_0_0_3482

1987 ranger 2.3l I4 W/ manual brakes

bore sizes are the same, port is fairly close, if it mounts in the same holes, will it work? do i need the brake fluid level sensor on the 87's mc or can i just bypass it with some resistors?

Update: ok, i took the old MC apart, it looks like the piston thats way back in the mc body is stuck, is it suposed to come out? would a stuck piston cause it to not have brake pressure? should i just use the granada MC and reflare my current brake lines to fit it?

Yes, a stuck piston can result in no pressure...because if it is stuck depressed then it cannot pressurize the brake fluid...and that means no brakes...and it sounds like it is the primary because you said the back brakes bled a bit but the front did not...so your secondary is working somewhat...

I'd go with the rebuild...even if you have to pay someone to rebuild it...if the Granada MC doesn't fit you may not be able to return it...and the primary reason why it may not work is the push rod...they may be slightly different meaning your pedal will be too high or too low...and probably too high considering the foot wells on a Granada...but can't really remember...

Wasting money on parts that don't work is more frustrating than paying someone...at least to me...

Dude, this is your BRAKES we are talking about. Not just some of them either, ALL OF THEM.

Don't cheap out, don't cut corners, don't be a douche. Get the right part that will fit the truck and do the job correctly or hook the truck to your buddy's vehicle when he heads to the scrapper tomorrow. Spend the money to do it right or get rid of the truck and get a few bucks for it.

There's nothing wrong with ..

manual brakes. Rangers came with them all thru the 80's into the 90's. If you have a specific need for a manual brake MC then get one. They are available new and are prefered over a rebuilt unit even though rebuilts are available. Be aware tha as you purchase or replace one, the threads on a primary port/secondary port may differ depending upon year and application. brake assembly adapters (for brake line threads) are available thru Napa or others if you find a mc different from what you have. (thread sizes) Generally, Power brake mc's are not usable as manual brake mc's. (generally) A good primer for this type pf thing is found at ....

this week I'm changing my 84 from power brake to manual ..it has been quite a refresher...

Best wishes...

my 88 ranger has manual brakes, i believe 89 was the first years power brakes cames standard. :icon_thumby:

I don't know for sure...only from what I've seen in the junkyard and other Rangers on the road...I never even thought about it till I went looking for a booster and saw what I thought was an 88..."Ahhhhh" I said...opened the hood and thought "who would take the booster and put the MC back like that"...then I thought "shut up"...lol

It's probably information that is posted on here somewhere...

I anyone needs a ...

standard shift "power brake" pedal, I'll swap with you for one from a manual brake Ranger. I would like to have the little "adapter plate" that the manual brake Cylinder bolts to as well..(the manual MC only uses the top two holes) Not hard to swap from one to the other really if you remove the steering column, so as to get the hanger assembly totally out..it seems like a lot to do but it comes out really quickly and makes the job much easier.

In case ur still awake (brakes can be boring) (we get SO involved in the GO and "usually disregard" the STOP) and interested if you click on any of the above words in this post and it will take you to a pictoral display of all of this in living color..

and..Merry Christmas to all..may you be safe, and avoid frostbite as you tinker and play out in the cold with your RBV toys...
