87 2.3 help (4 pics)

I'm loving this thread.

kmack - I've got an 83 2.0 with all the emissions still hooked up. If it will help you, I'd be glad to take a couple of motor shots. Just let me know what you need.

Mark_88. I love your carb/intake/exhaust set up. It's exactly what I want for my truck. I've already got the factory shorty header from a 94 at the bone yard. And I plan to do the exhaust system all the way back. Did you plug the EGR and O2 sensor holes on yours? If so, how? And please tell me more about your carb and intake. You say you got the carb from an 87 Mustang II. What intake are you using?

i dont really have any money so i usually just remove the parts that aren't absolutely necessary. i got rid of the air bypass/air control valve. it was plugged with a bolt, and wasn't really doing much. i think i will get the newer headers from a junkyard when i get cash, then get some pipe from a garage's garbage bin. my cat is stock but super duper rusted.

and i dont have a pcv system on my engine. the valve cover has an old cap filled with wire that i guess acts like a filter to release pressure so i'll see if its clogged.

i am also getting all my lights to work. basically just needed a full set of bulbs. simple enough.

Thanks! Glad you like that...it is actually a rare carb/intake but you could probably find something very similar because it is the Motorcraft 5200 carb sitting on the 2.3 2 barrel carb intake that just happened to be in one piece on the Mustang...the intake itself is referred to as an "offy type" intake, and that means it is similar to the "offenhauser" intake system, but I couldn't find any references to it...

The header was plugged with a bolt (since it's threaded) and a copper pipe cap on top of a short copper pipe that I had flared to fit inside the bolt-on cap...it's not hard to do that at all though...

Just found this...might be a bit much, but watch the video in the seventh post down...

Interesting 2.3 Ranger engine

That is your carbon canister. It takes fumes from gas tank and holds them while car is off and burns the fumes when you start.

One connection goes from the canister to your engine (intake manifold) and the other connection goes from the canister to a fuel vent line.

The connection between the intake and canister has one or two valves inbetween to control when the venting takes place. Being the truck is an elder compared to mine Im not even sure that the sensors exist for your year.

So Mark. It sounds like you're not running the EGR either. Any run problems?

And is it possible that I could find a similar carb/intake setup in the junkyard? If so, do you know what cars I should be looking for? Also, I've got the 2.0 which I believe has the round port heads? Will this intake match up?

The D-port heads will work with the O-port intake and vise-versa...but it's better to match them if possible...I ran my O-port head with the D-port intake for about a year without any problems...

It may be possible to find the same setup, but an even better option is the lower intake from an 86EFI and an adaptor with the holley 350 cfm carb...there are pics somewhere in the forum from Kenny S...if you do a search on his posts and look at his setup I'm sure you'll be just as impressed...

However, the 5200 Motorcraft carb was quite common back in the 70s and 80s and if you have a junkyard that keeps older vehicles around you may find one...either that or try e-bay...

I haven't been running the truck so I'm not sure what problems the EGR system may cause...I don't have fancy electronics or even a CEL on my truck so I have no idea about the problems this may cause...but I'm doubtful if any will surface...

I can always hook it back up when I find a suitable pipe for it though...I just wanted a one piece pipe so the vacuum draw will be more effective...it's supposed to draw off excess gas fumes to be burned, and a pipe with leaks in it is pretty useless at that...

My 93 does not have any solenoids or purge valves. It's a direct connection between the canister and the intake.

so should i cap that sucker? or does it have a missing line?

so i got the motor ready to accept some new plugs, and headers.

this was removed in the proccess and will not make it back in. anything i should know about this guy? what i should do in lieu of his absence?

this is the mess of wires. it actually issn't that bad. i had to cut two that went to the trans, and one other one wrapped around the steering columb and broke. the problem is that they all go somewhere and there is still extra wires, one from my DC idle speed control motor and one from my choke cup.

this is the dirt that was in the oil removed from the truck. i let the oil drain out and jacked up the corners of the truck, bounced around and made sure i got all the oil i could out, then poured through 2 liters of some 10W40 to clear out more shit.

this is the collection of junk i've removed from the truck.
im going to try and score a whole exaust kit from the junkyard with some nice headers.

this is the trunk. i removed the spare tire carrier. it was so seized and would never be functional. you can see the rust on my frame. its crazy.:icon_hornsup:

took out all the vacuum lines, hoping i'll find a whole kit of extras in the junkyard rangers in the city. most didn't go to anything so im just going to probably reuse mine.

same goes for the wiring.
any tips? i want to clean the wires because half are covered in oil and half are covered in dust. that wont mix well if i try and just wipe them all so i was wondering if they'd be ok if i put them in the dishwasher and then dried them as fast as i could.

this is the extra oil. i drained all of it into this bucket, then emptied 2L through the motor, and then put all of it into a 4L jug and this is the leftover. so by my estimation the truck was holding just over 4L of dirty oil.
yoyo

kmack, what's the latest? I'm watching with great interest.

Your second photo on post #40 looks like the tubing and valves that route air from the air pump. If you're not re-installing the air pump (and you don't need it) then this will be unnecessary.

As far as washing your wiring in the dish washer, I would not recommend it. Don't use water in any way. You'll create a rust problem within the wire casing that will show up later. If the wiring is really crusty, use some electric parts cleaner or WD40.

On the exhaust..............Look for a roughly 94-96 Ranger 2.3 exhaust. Ford used a pretty decent tubular exhaust header that will flow better than what you had. And it will bolt right in place.

Keep going man.......................you're neck deep now.

the second one down is the connectors for the air pump...not needed if you trash the air pump...

I would not recommend putting wires in a dish washer...just spray them with WD-40 and wipe them down with a clean rag...and then spray them again and let it sit because it will repel water...same as your dizzy...or you can buy the silicone spray and do everything with that stuff...it's actually better than WD or other oil sprays...

We used to throw keyboards in the dishwasher -- dry them off and they are good to go. Just make sure that there are no ecu/boards with capacitors. Let it sit for a couple days before reinstalling. I'd imagine water can get into the wires being that old and you want to leave plenty of time for it to dry.

***Mark and Blue may be right about the rust.. In the computers they are never exposed to the temperatures/humidty experienced outdoors.

cool. thanks for the advice. i cant believe the junk yards aren't open on the weekends. so this weekend was a waste. but this week i'll probably go to the junkyard and look for entire carburetors to replace mine with.
