Sorry its taken so long to get some pics up, but there are now a bunch of pics in my albums.

in this thread they are not

Nice work. As far as ideas go here's a quick pic of my 84....

From the sounds of it your not wanting to go to the extremes that I have(Im still working on some 60's for mine.
The V-8 swaps(as mentioned earlier) are pretty popular for these years of Rangers, as are the 4.0, you will get better mpg with the 4.0. Definitely get the D35 and the 8.8, not that the D28 and 7.5 will leave you stranded, but its better to err on the side of caution(especially if your gonna wheel it).
If your gonna use it mainly as a DD, I would go with the AT's. I used to have a set on an old 73 I used to have and loved them in the winter.
Keep showing that truck some love and keep us updated on the updates....:icon_thumby:

Thanks. Yep, I plan on eventually doing the 35/8.8 route, as well as extended radius arms and auto fab bent beams. I haven't exactly decided what exactly is gonna happen to the rear suspension. For now I was just thinking of explorer leafs, since I got new rancho 5000s that will be fine for now. It has overload in the rear now, that I haven't bothered to take out, but the mule kick is getting annoying. Motor wise, I would like to go the 4.0 sohc route. The only thing I don't like about doing the 4.0 thing is everyone says you need to swap dashes. I would think there would be a gauge setup that would work with our dashes... It's been a slow moving project & right now is kind of at a stand still as I've already spent much more than I intended too & chips are running very low at the moment.

Well figured I'd post this here since this thread explains what all has been done to the truck so far. Well last Friday I picked up a complete 2006 4.0 sohc V6 mated to the 5R55E five speed automatic transmission & transfer case. It is complete from all accessories (alternator, power steering pump, a/c condensed), wiring harness, & ECU. It even has the front driveshaft (which I probably won't be able to use). It came out of a 2006 Ranger & has 60k miles on it. Looks like I will have a spring project! I'm definitely excited to throw this new drivetrain in my truck. I know ill have my work cut out for me & ill probably start another thread about the swap. I was hoping to keep of a manual transmission, but oh well, the newer 5ranger speed autos seem to be doing well. My old 98 with this transmission lasted 225k before I had to replace it. I knows its not going to be as straightforward as a ohv swap, but I think the benefits will pay off...

Ditch the 4.0. Put a Chinook engine in it.

Heh, I wouldn't trade my OHV for a OHC if someone swapped 'em for free and stuck the motor in like it was a factory piece. The OHC motors are just an OHV block with a shaft in place of the cam driving the chain for the cams up in the heads. I also do a lot of low rpm stuff in my Mazda (500-1000) and the OHC motor stalls out far quicker when you rev down that low. I also feel the same way about a 5.0 swap for the same reason - low rpm torque and stalling.

Well I already have it now, & I'm going to try to make it's a close as possible as looking like a factory setup. I seen at least one similar swap on here, so I know its doable. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is swapping out my dash. I would like to stay with my existing one if possible, but if I do swap, its going to be an 04-11 style. I've seen some writeups of people swapping in 2nd gen dashes, but the newer one should fit fine as well I would think. I just want this to be a nice & clean package when its done. If I still desire more power when I'm done with this swap, ill just have to keep an eye out for explorer express supercharger setup. I know the sohc responds really well to boost.

Chicken wings.

My advice to you would be to ditch the 5r55E and the transfer case attached to it, find a M5OD and a pre 1997 1354 T case, and get a manual trans EEC and wiring harness out of a 1990-1994 Truck and use that, it'll be quite a bit less of a headache and the OHV EEC will run the SOHC motor without issue AFAIK...

I would love to find a 1354m t-case & ditch the electric one & would like to find a manual tranny as well, but why the obd1 (90-94) computer? Wouldn't I be better off if I did find a M5OD & ECU from an 01-11 4.0 SOHC? I know the newer ECU will have more sensors & secondary o2 sensors, but in my 98 Jeep grand cherokee 5.9, I just took the secondary o2 sensor out of the exhaust & put it in a safe place under the jeep & never had any cel. I would think I could do the same to this current setup since my truck has no kitty. If not I'm sure I could have the ECU tuned to turn off the secondary o2. Is th aeir any drawbacks to using a OBD1 ECU? I would think that if this engine ever see's any kind of forced induction the 01-11 ECU would be best, but definitely open for advice. If I do stick with the newer ECU wouldn't I have to swap out to a 4th gen dash? If so does anyone know if they swap out as easy as the second gen dash or is it totally different. I'll assume I can find a dash & remove the airbag & not even be able to tell. I've never seen a 3rd/ 4th gen dash swap into a 1st gen.
