I was planning on keeping the 2.9 unless I can find a donor with a 4.0. Supposedly I should just be able to bolt the new trans right up on a 2wd, but I'm not sure about the 4x4. Will I need to relocate the transfer case/ get new driveshafts?

I think the M5OD is longer then the tk.

But good choice keepin the 2.9

Not sure about the tk.

I Swapped my FM146 and BW 1350 for a M5OD and BW 1354. Everything bolted up no issue.

If you look for one, there are m5od transmissions that were built with a taller(?) first gear ratio for the 2.9.

The TK is several inches shorter than an M5OD.

In an 86 here are the mods you will need to make:

Clutch hydraulic line will need changed, it won't mate to the M5OD slave. I'd just get a whole set and replace it all.

The transmission crossmember needs to move back. If you grind out the rivets that hold the mounting ears and remove them you will see the second set of holes. The ears and crossmember can be reused, they just need to move. Reinstall the ears with a set of grade 5 bolts and nylon or stover lock nuts.

The driveshafts have to change length. If you are keeping the BW1350 transfercase find a set of shafts from an 85 or newer 4x4 that had an A4LD automatic. They will be the correct length.

Your shifter hole may or may not need to be modified. Your floor patch plate almost certainly will need to be.

Your speedo cable will need to be changed for a longer one. Again, parts from an RBV with an A4LD will work.

No the drive shafts will be the wrong lengths.

but there is an easy out for you as the M5OD-R1 is the same overall length as the A4LD, get Both drive-shafts out of an automatic truck with the same axle/T-case combo as your truck and the same Cab/Bed configuration.

As an additional note. the "Fun part" of this swap is finding a T-case shifter that works on an M5OD-R1

axles already upgraded or are they still 28/7.5 with baby u joints.?.?
