sooooo... the ranger wont pass smog, and from what the smog people have told me, itd be expensive to get it to pass. so im saying **** smog, im putting a '39 chevy cab on it and never smogging that shit again. so it wont quite be a ranger anymore... or a ford (which sucks.) but itl be a cool project!
I say update the engine to something better that can pass..like a 5.0.
As good as the 2.8 is, the emissions stuff on it will kill it in states that require emissions testing. But I have seen them pass in California recently.

Iv thought about that, and it was my plan originally but I just don't have the time and money for it... And this Chevy has been sitting at my grandpa's for a long time so I'd like to use it. Plus itl be unique when I'm done, I have a lot plans for it
If the truck is going to be a strict off-road rig them no biggy since you won't need the wiring for the HVAC, head lights, dash lights, etc... just the simple things such as ignition, steering, wipers and the pedals.
It's gonna be road legal and I'm gonna drive it about half the time, iv done several cab swaps with an old cab onto a new chassis and iv never had too much of a problem... I'm gonna miss having the ranger though, I really love having one.
