So im not new to this site but recently became a member when i had ?'s that i cound't find in other posts....

First off i have an 84' 2.8l 2X4 ranger with the stock 5-speed tk5...i also have a borg warner trans(assuming t5 cause its a 5-speed) from a 87-93 mustang 4 banger(assuming 2.3l), but its at a friends about 45 minutes away so i cant really compare bellhousings and bolt patters and such to see if it fits....

1. Will the BW trans fit my 2.8....if not can i swap bellhousings?
2. Will the stock drive shaft fit?
3. what all would i need if im able to do the trans swap?

Thanks for ANY info!!!

-Bones

The T5 will not fit your 2.8 without an adapter. I don't know if a bellhousing was ever made to mount the T5 to the 2.8/2.9/4.0 family.

Not sure on the driveshaft issue...

You'll have to cut a new hole in your floorboard to relocate the shifter if you are able to swap transmissions. You might have to do something with the wires for the reverse switch too...

Btw, Welcome to TheRangerStation.com (Officially) Oh, and your name is pretty cool.

DAMN! Well thanks for the info. The reason i was asking is my trans is starting to go out(noisy in gears with good fluid level) and the t5 was free.

Also, i took my tk5 out and the clutch disk is really worn but the flywheel and pressure plate are still ok, the release bearing is moveable on the transmission shaft so i guessing this is bad...right? When i removed the release bearing from the trans...i noticed what looked to be teeth on the inside of the bearing that were worn down almost completly and no teeth at all on the transmission shaft that it came off of.....is this right or should there be teeth on both the inside of the release bearing AND the trans bearing shaft?

Thanks again for the info and any future info anyone puts in...and thanks for the welcome.

I don't think there should be teeth on the inside of the throwout bearing...

If the release bearing is something different, then I'm not too sure I know what you're talking about. I have a TK5, but it's been seven years since I've touched it and I was still a punk teenager back then.

Oh, and a transmission swap also calls for a different starter. I thought of that last night while trying to fall asleep.

Thanks for the info...lots of help! But i got one more question....

what is the easiest trans to swap in my 84 2.8 tk5 ranger?
Also what year and make/model trucks or cars could i find that trans in?

Oh and does it makes it any easier to keep my beelhousing and just swap transmissions?....im sure it does but im not too fond of transmissions for the rangers except the tk5 cause that what i have now.

M5OD is probably your best option. If you "aren't fond" of other Ranger transmissions for your swap because of the mods that will be needed to make it work, you are only looking at more to take a trans out of another vehicle.

An M5OD will give you the most benefit for the least work/cost and greatest availability of parts.

The M5OD is the best from what ive been reading on this site, but what year(s) did it come in the ranger? And did it come in any cars or other makes/models? Also, would i need to use the drive shaft from the M5OD or would mine work?

Im not too familiar with RANGER transmissions swaps, but i know how to take out a trans and put it all back in right so if there are some mods or anything like that needed for a swap then i can do it. :icon_welder:

I need answers too...

I'm looking to add a gear for my '84 Ranger. I've got a 4spd auto right now and I'd like to have the feel of the 5spd manual plus the advantages of an extra gear. I've got the 2.8 engine like mention in previous post and I'm curious about this M50D deal.

As you may be able to tell, transmission are not my bag, but I'll figure it out with some help from you guys.
