84 2.8 leaking from oil filter or somewhere near/around it. Oil filter has droplets of oil when the motor is off.

Ill see about buying a SAE kit as well. Since My stuff isn't really complete sadly. I also need some new stuff anyway.

I would replace the copper washer. I don’t remember was size the bolt head is.

These are the O-Rings I got. Rock auto only has these... Whats the part number for the copper washer so I can try and get it.

Both times I just re-used the copper washer. No one had it, and in my experience they are re-usable unless they are really tore up.

I can't remember what size it was, but maybe it was a 18mm from what you are saying. You can't beat a metric wrench set that has ALL the sizes from 10mm up to 19mm. I find myself using the odd ball sizes more often that I would have thought. 18mm is a oddball size, as well as 16mm. But the set I have has them all in 1mm increments.

For anyone that may need to know, I damaged my thrust washer when reinstalling my oil filter adapter on my 83 2.8 ranger. The washer can be replaced with Dorman- HD solutions copper drain plug gasket #095-5002CD. I found a 3 pack on Amazon for $14 but looking the part up on the Dorman site it seems to be used pretty commonly on big rig diesel engine oil pan plugs so I would imagine you could find them at a truck shop or diesel parts supply.

Yup, change those copper washers (gaskets) everytime. Use them on the drain bolt, it's a German thing.

That's great information - I have been deep into leaks on these several times in the past couple years. Here is some more info about these on the 2.9 and 4.0's if anyone finds this and needs the part #'s:

Here's some pics and specs for the 2.8 oil filter adapter from the same thread. I ordered the Felpro 413 O-ring recommended in the thread but found that an O-ring assortment pack from AutoZone had a better fit and are Viton, not rubber, so should last longer. When I replaced my rubber O-ring, it was hard and brittle. It crumbled when I tried to take it off. So Viton may be a better choice.

On AutoZone's site just search for Dorman Viton Standard O-Ring Assortment 18 Piece.

I had to have this job done recently on my 84. The parts cost under $ 5 and the labor cost was over $ 300. I'm 70+ and getting the bolts on the exhaust Y pipe right at the oil filter adapter out of the way was not something I could do. This cleaned up the last oil leak on my Ranger. :)
