4 bolt chrome "western" mirrors. They seem to have a problem where the ball heads rust out, so you end up with a mirror either hopelessly stuck or hopelessly floppy.

What replacements do people like, that are actually stable? (also, why does everyone on the web try to sell F150-sized mirrors as "ranger" mirrors: the mounts are both wider and taller by several inches!!!) Best to just walk around the junkyard and test every mirror I find?

If it's convenient to do so that may be the way to go.
My only Picker yard is over 30 miles away and near 10 miles farther than my farthest usual boundaries, so it really is not convenient to go there, but come some better weather I just might go browsing a time or 2

The usual factory mirrors were called low mount swing aways and the brackets were held to the doors with 4 screws, all below the window. I suspect that's what you have. West Coast mirrors bolt to the doors above and below the window and look like this:

Yup. after much more investigation, you're right in the general sense. although the ford service manual for 83/84 does *explicitly* refer to the low-mount mirrors (17682) as "western type". Which is interesting, b/c the prior generation of trucks did have "west coast" and "west coast jr" mirrors like your photo.

I know, I was there.

The rivet that breaks off, drill it out and replace with a stainless dome headed bolt.

Looks the same as works much better.

The 1985 Ranger sales brochure calls them "Low-mount Western Swingaway Mirrors"
