So I'm setting up my ring and pinion on my 8.8. I swapped it from a 28 spline to a 31 spline carrier and used the same shims. The problem is my pattern on the drive side is on the inside of the tooth and the coast side is on the outside of the tooth. I am trying to figure out how to get a better pattern. My Yukon manual says its acceptable but I don't feel comfortable running it like that. Any ideas?

Its the middle right one.

You put a 31 spline carrier in a 28 spline housing? You realize the axles will not fit, right?

Yes I know that. That's why I'm using a 31 spline carrier.

Its a 31 spline carrier in a 31 spline 8.8. I JUST swapped the bearings, pinion, and ring gear.

Now I'm stuck at figuring out the pattern.

I am setting up gears for my 8.8 right now too and we have similar patterns. I read that the most important factor is that the pattern is centered in regards to the face and flank, and this diagram supports that theory.

I just moved the pinion away and the pattern got closer to the edges. I am now moving the pinion towards the carrier and I will report back my findings.

I think you are right though. I had a good pattern on my 28 spline carrier. This is just aggravating to me though.

Well I moved the pinion closer to the ring gear and I have a MUCH better pattern. Its still a little off (like a little off center on both sides) but I am happy with what its at. Backlash is at .008 so I think I'm ready to go.

What housing? 31 spline axles will not fit in a 28 spline housing, regardless of what carrier you're using.

After reading your post like 10 times I think what you said is that you simply took gears from a 28 spline 8.8 and are using them in a 31 spline 8.8, which is fine. Your wording in your original post is very confusing.

Anyways, assuming they're used gears, typically with used gears you want to focus on getting the coast side of the pattern in good shape.

Well thats good to hear that the hard part (for most new guys) is over. Good luck with your 8.8

Sorry if my wording was confusing. I've got greasy hands and my mind is else where. Yes, its a 31 spline housing.

I don't know when the point of bearings becoming used and the gears being consider "used" but I have at most 5,000 miles on the gears and bearings. I set the pinion preload to the used bearing specs. And, also I had to replace the inner pinion bearing. I damaged it removing it.

Thanks! This is my 2nd time doing this to an 8.8 and I failed at setting up a ring and pinion on a d35 and a d44. I got too frustrated with both of them and gave up. The annoying thing about the d35 was my magnetic dial indicator would stick to it. lol

I would consider 5000 miles as used. Good call.
