8.8 31 spline axle destroyed need guidince and info

'99+ F-150's are disc, dunno about the E-series they usually march to their own drum. The '99 F-150's are well into the metric wheel boltpatterns by then though.

Aren't these going to be 9.75's? I seem to remember reading there were hardly any 8.8's with disc in these.

Every 4.2 and 4.6 truck has a 31 spline 8.8, only the 5.4 tricks got the 9.75.

Not sure how the current linup is set up however... :icon_confused:

Correct. But I believe a very large portion of the 8.8's are drums.

There is a note on the Motorcraft drums for a '99 4.6 truck at the O'Reilly's website:

Before 11/29/99 8.8 Or 9.75 Ring Gear, With 5 - M12 Mounting Bolts (for the record they also changed the wheel studs to M14's after they went to disc brakes too)

They show a ton of different rear rotor options but only two drums, a bunch of pads but only one set of shoes (that I don't think the pic is right for because it includes very late model 5.4 trucks as well, I would guess another parking brake set)... probably for the few '99's that snuck out before the midyear changeover.

Dad's '05 4.6 truck has disc brakes...

As you can see, if the drums are so common the parts selection isn't great. I will ask my brother tonight, who knows how many F-150 brake jobs he has done...

You say that this is the third time rear has gone out but only the last time fixed by mechanic. What went wrong the first two times? You did the measurements and say he didn't put the tubes in right. You say the axle moves up going one way and down the other. Like to know how that happens if it really a lot. Something just not square in how the axle is mounted?

the first time it went out my dad said his coworker used to rebuild them. he didnt put the crush sleeve in right and the pinion was sticking out the diff and destoryed the bearings and blew afew teeth off the gears. and ya the way it looks is the axle is not mounted square and it crooked but by only a half inch on both sides.

Well I'd sure look at car-part.com for a Explorer in your area. Sounds like the best, cheapest option.

1. Find a new mechanic.
2. 95-01 explorers and explorer sports have 31 Spline 8.8s with discs.
3. ALL explorer sport tracs are drum brake 31 spline (i have one, and replaced it already)
Most 4x4 ex's were l/s, so look for those. The 4.10 8.8's were easier to find in the sports...

Not all Sport tracs are drum....just the earlier ones. My 2005 trac had a 4.10 l/s 8.8 with discs.

if you wanna order an awesome built 8.8

eastcoastgear.com can do it.

no. i am just buying the axle and they are going to make sure its amazing. also prob have them add rock sliders on the truck. and than after all this i'm going to start again on my front and rear bumpers

I stand corrected...wonder when they went disc? Also, is the proportioning valve built in the abs module/pump, or is it mounted on the frame? I haven't looked yet, but when I changed my 02 to disc, I never checked for that and i have little braking in the rear...

01 and 02 were the only years that were drum IIRC.

As far as I know it is the master cylinder that is different.

stopped off at http://lengerracing.com/. this weekend he is going to upgrade my rear to a beast expo axle 8.8 with better parts. than as soon as the aubern gear posi/locker gets here they will be throwing that in there. than soon switching to 4.56 gears.
