7.5 vs 8.8, and 4.10 vs 4.56?

Axle:

I have a 7.5 right now. Will it handle a locker and 32's fine? Or would a 28spline 8.8 be a better, more well rounded axle? There is concern with the 7.5's ring and pinion being a weak point with the 28spline axles.

Gears:

I have 4.10's at the moment, is it worth the cost to go from 4.10's to 4.56's for 32's? Will I be able to tell a big difference?

Thanks,
Ryan

Well, the weakest part of a 7.5 is generally the spider gears, running a locker eliminates this problem. Welded is where it's strongest, I've heard of people abusing a welded 7.5 with 35s and a V8 and not hurting it. I run 31s with 4.10s and I like them a lot, from my calculations, 33s and 4.10s would be equivalent to the stock 205s and 3.45s so I think 32s would be fine, 4.56 would be better but I don't think it's worth the money.

i have 3.73 gears and 31" tires. i could use a bit more gear.

should i go with 4.10 or 4.56?

You can find the 8.8 with 4.10 gears (low mileage) in a yard for $350 give or take. Going to cost a whole lot more to upgrade to the 4.56. Check out
www.car-part.com for what is out there around you.

4.56 is the ideal with 31s on a 4cyl or 3.0L motor, if you can swing it, it's worth it. 4.10s can still be acceptable though.

in any case the best bet is to go with an explorer axle. its not a straight bolt in for most but worth the effort. 410 is one thing as it is easy to find already equipped that way, 456 will be ideal though.

What's a good cheap gear? Genuine Gear? I'm planning on possibly regearing a true D35 diff i have available, but if I go through the trouble of gearing, I'm going to to want to go ahead with a 4.56, and if I'm going to go through the trouble of regearing a rear axle, I may as well look for an 8.8. Plus with a 7.5, the lockrite says not to use with gears deeper than 4.10.

Plus a D35 and 8.8 combo regeared at 4.56's(or would 4.88's work better) would be best. This way, I know I'll have good gearing, and I can set the gears without having my truck down.

It will work with deeper gears, just like with 3.73s or 4.10s the ring gear will have to be clearanced to get the crosspin out.

I got a Lock-Rite and 3.73:1 in my 7.5", it works fine, haven't broke anything. A little slow on the streets, but that's not what it's for.:icon_thumby:

The locker was a bitch to install, but definitely worth it. I've wheeled pretty hard a few times, and the axle has held up to 33" TSLs.

I'd give the 4.88s some serious thought with 32s, as you're kindof right in-between two ideals there (you have a 4cyl right?). If you ever go to 33s, you'll still be golden.

Edit: oops, N/M, you said 3.0 right at the top duh
I'd still say 4.88 if you plan on 33s ever, otherwise 4,56 would work well also.

Na, I'm going with a 4" lift range, I think I'll just stick with 4.56's.

we will all see soon how strong a 7.5 really is, i already had one layin around with 4.56's welded up ready to rock and roll so im runnin that on my truck, swapped in 4.0, trucks 5spd w/ tires that measure 35"

i got the 8.8 layin here from the explorer and if i kill the 7.5 ill already have the 8.8 built, but i prefer the ground clearance thta the 7.5 gives me versus the 8.8, after all, thats what the name of the wheelin game is all about, ground clearance, without it your dead in the mud

we know how strong a 7.5 really is.

mud racing under 300 hp with 33 boggers hold up very well fully welded in mid weight vehicles...4000 pounds and under.....(properly welded that is)

with a full carrier locker they are real good mud racing under 300 hp with 33 boggers. they hold up very well to the limits of the shafts wheeling with 33's

drop in lockers bring different results. 4 cyl can kill them with any 33's "wheeling"...though in general they hold up surprisingly well..factory l/s or open......total sadness.
