6.9l International

I see Jegs has shaft/joint parts. That part looks pretty easy. What's involved with putting the outside steering box on?

that motor is very heavy and doesnt really have alot of horsepower behind it. tourque, yes but a 302 would be a better swap choice. we had a '86 F250 with that motor and it was a 2wd. it would get stuck on a level grass surface that was wet. way too much weight up front and not enough in the rear. it was a tire-burner on pavement but a dissapointment as a farm truck. twice we had the transmission shifter come apart and go into reverse when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. (creeper 1st 4-speed manual) we ended up trading it at 12,000 miles for a new bronco ('89 302 4-speed manual) a cummins 4bt would be a better diesel choice for the ranger chassis. and i would go with a 4wd unless you never leave the highway or see snow.

Having that much torque just off of idle going to the back of an empty truck with low gearing would probably have a lot to do with it too...

depends on what one you use.

the big ford unit you can just drill holes and make a backing plate, or box the frame ect...up to you.

or use the dodge units mounting stuff adapted to a chevy box. just go look at one and it will be self explanatory...

at least it better be self explanatory if your seriously thinking of doing this:D

I'm sure you could put it in.

Most of the time people hack their truck up past the point where they can't go back, and can't go forward, and we never hear about how it all came out.

Put it in the bed and you'll be popping wheelies in a couple weekends even if the radiator is zip-tied to a lightbar and the fuel's coming out of a milk jug.

aye. thats definatly a fact. but bed mounted would be harder and costly.

and my radiators been zip tied to my lightbar for 15 years....or are you referring to me:D....and my fuels come from a radiator jug on quite a few occasions as well...

this is why i really like the lil gm 6.2/6.5 units. they really are pissed on too hard by the masses.....used within thier design goals they are a damn fine engine imo. shit ton easier to deal with then a navistar engine anyways:huh:

Next time I'm at the salvage yard I'll check out my options and see which box would be best. The 6.2 is actually my plan "B".:D I'd much rather have the 6.9 or 7.3(NA). The only thing that impresses me about the 6.2 is how long they last given the poor design. Way to close to a gasser in strength. Plus the international sounds more manly.:stirthepot:

6.2 is a detroit diesel...well designed and engineered at detroit for the general:rolleyes:

just simply way ahead of its time for a 70's problem with 70's technology in which it fit the bill it was intended for perfectly. it sure as hell cant touch anything international or cummins...but for 1/2 tons and rangers i think they are great:D

should be ripping into my trucks ass here and setting my 6.5 in there to see how i like it. i will let ya know when its clatterin down the road.:icon_thumby:

All I've got to say is that I'm glad that this ill handling, under braked contraption is going to be endangering people on the other side of the country. That is, if it actually gets done.

No problem, that's what I'm here for :thefinger:

Let me know when it does. I'll be sure to stay at home that day :thefinger: Actually... if you make it all the way out here in that thing, let me know. I'd like to see it. And maybe I could convince you to drag some of my shit home with you :icon_rofl: I found another 79 Bronco, but this one is super clean. I'm a trip to bank away from buying it.

likely nevada...but not sure yet.

Apparently you havent figured out which side that is yet :thefinger: Enough of cluttering this mans thread now, he's got a contraption to build.

mhuggler- Make sure you start a build thread on this when you get started. I'd like to follow this build for sure. For the steering shaft, you would need to do the same thing alot of hotrodders do, and use u-joints and bearings to route the shaft around the engine. It can be done. As for an outside steering box, it would be as simple as drilling new holes to match the bolt pattern, sleeving the holes so you don't collapse the rail, and possibly shimming the box to make it sit right on the rail. Just take a good look at the pitman arm location, and take measurements to make sure the draglink will be in the right position front to back on the framerail.

Will- Some of your hairbrained ideas just make me shake my head and laugh. Do you seriously think there is more room between the back of the cab and the axle than there is under the hood? You might want to go take some measurements, because to put that combo in the bed would require a v drive and axle reversal. Not to mention the weight wouldn't be properly centered over the rear axle. :thefinger:

10-4 on the build thread! I'm looking for an ideal donor truck right now. Lots of engines around, but I'd like to start with the whole deal. Thanks for the steering box tips.:icon_thumby:

i would start a build thread, but i dont plan on it taking more then 24 hrs labor once i am prepped from my base measurments :D

the hardest part is gonna be the radiator mods and hydroboost upgrades. those dont have to happen right away but i am thinking it may be bast to do those first and get them worked out then pull the 302.. just too busy , was hoping to get it in june:dunno: likely i will deal with the d-shafts as i have not been able to find a free/real cheap 32 spline 208 input. would be nice to keep that but since all my parts cases were robbed it dont matter i guess, i will be upgrading the case eventually anyway.

of course all that is the hope for....unless i am off on my measurements. which the only problem there is steering. but aerostar van parts pre floorboard will remedy that, and add 20 plus hrs too btw:dntknw: which will be a pisser. if thats the case i wont gedt it done on one set of days off..

a 6.9 on the otherhand...i would be pulling the cab and doing a few things. the hypermax stuff is just too cheap so i know i would have to beef the frame..

glad i dont have a free good running 6.9 laying around...that would be work;missingteeth;
