Ok, so i have a '92 ranger with a 2.3 5sp and its only 2wd. i just got it about two weeks ago and now running into problems. first off whenever i have the clutch engaged it makes a whining noise. checked the clutch fluid and its fine. still have no idea what it is.. besides that i was coming up to a stop light and pressed the cluth pedal and had no pressure. i had to pump the pedal to build pressure (guessing that the slave going out?). ALSO i was driving today and heard a loud pop from the transmission and now whenever i let out the clutch its whines/grinds extremly loud in every gear excecpt 4th isnt as bad. any ideas on what it could be would be awsome. thank you in advanced!

needs a typical clutch job. replace all parts and it will be good. Pressure could just need bleed but the grinding with the clutch out is a pilot bearing.

Only reason I'm saying countershaft bearings is because he said the noise isn't as bad in 4th gear, which is the only gear that doesn't use the countershaft.

Sounds like the countershaft bearings are going.

It is not the counter shaft bearings. It is the pocket bearing that has failed which is between the input and main shafts. The input and main are not running true and are meshing more with the counter shaft. I have been through many of the M5OD 1's and 2's and have never seen a countershaft bearing failure unless it was totally run without any oil in it.

do you think its worth repairing or just finding a junk yard trans? Im just hesitent because ive never dropped or messed with a transmission before. i guess it could be a learing experience.

They aren't that hard to rebuild. But the cost may exceed what you want to spend. I rebuilt mine years ago for right at 400 dollars. That was with the input and main shafts and the bearing and seal kit. The pilot bearing is only as hard as you make it getting it out. There are several ways to remove it but the easiest way is to either buy or rent a puller. Where are you located?

$400 not bad. ive heard alot of different ways to take it off but im sure your right becasue the puller was what everyone resorted to when their method didnt work. i live in southern MN area ,55396. cant i rent the puller from an auto parts store?

If you're looking to buy a good/guaranteed transmission just send me a PM and let me know where you're located. I repair them and sell them and I could give you a price quote shipped to your door if I know your location.

Im kinda bumpin this but i dropped my transmission and have noticed there is a good amount of end play coming from the bellhousing side shaft ( i dont know what its called at the moment). is that bearing a common one to fail? when i spin the shaft by hand it also makes a good amount of noise is this common also? im really lacking transmission knowledge so bear with me. A transmission shop wants $70 to tell me whats wrong with it but im trying to figure out on my own.

If you can get it apart the ones here who have been through them can coach you through it.

So i ended up meeting a guy that rebuilds transmissions.I took it to him for the hell of it and found out it was run out of ATF before i even baught it from the guy. I guess the tranny guy knows the guy that sold me the truck. I think i migh just end up paying him to fix my transmission because its so damn cold in my garage to fix it myself an im sick of not driving my truck. does $3-400 sound reasonable to pay for having just the bearings replaced? sounds kinda pricey

I think i paid too much when I had mine rebuilt. Buddy wanted $500 just to open it up,in the end it cost me about $900 with new bearings and syncros I believe. I couldn't find a used one or I would have just swapped it. Oh and i removed it myself also. Next time I'll tear into it myself.
