5r44e won’t engage

I have a 2003 Ranger Edge 2wd, 3.0 with a 5r44e. Kid was driving it to work this morning and lost drive gears and reverse. I pulled a hose from a transmission cooler line below radiator, started it up and very little fluid came from the hose. I’m guessing the pump? How much pressure should I be getting from that hose.
Edited to say fluid level check was good and a P1780 code for the control switch

Forgive me starting at square one, but did you check the fluid level? Any leaks?

I mean, I would expect pretty good flow through the cooler, but only if there's actually fluid in it.

No I should have mentioned that earlier. The fluid level was good. I’m glad you started at square one that way nothing gets missed.

OK, well then we're going to get above my pay grade pretty quick here.

Like I said I would expect a pretty strong flow through the cooler, and assuming there's no blockage in the lines, pump is a reasonable guess I would think.

If it were me, before pulling the trans though I'd be tempted to drop the pan and check the filter assembly. I never lost all gears on my 5R44 but I had some really bad shift quality until I discovered that whoever did the last transmission service left an o-ring off the filter so it was sucking air. Maybe your pickup is clogged one way or another? Other wiser people will chime in soon.

I'm guessing this is yet another place where an advanced obd2 scanner could probably help out but I have no idea what data is available on the 5r44

Thanks Pentode. I updated the original post with the fluid level and the only code her boyfriend pulled up with his reader. We changed the filter and fluid within the last 12 months so it should be fine.

Ok well that's me out of ideas then.

Oh shoot, I'm old and I think slow. These are fully electronically controlled transmissions. Have you checked wiring, connectors etc around the trans?

edit: I have no idea how much of the computer magic happens totally internal to the transmission and how much communication happens with the ECM etc... but I'm sure it needs basic stuff like powers and grounds to operate.

Visual of what wiring I could see close by the trans. I have a friend over with a better scan tool now. Maybe that’ll point in a some direction. I saw a video about the sprag gear being broken. Video said if you have no drive or reverse but low 1&2 work it’s a sprag gear. Nothing works on this one. Hopefully it’s the pump. I’m also a young 57 yrs old

Well, pump is easy if you don't mind pulling the trans. ;) Let us know what the scanner reveals.

So his scanner showed a P1705, transmission range sensor out of read codes range. Changed the range sensor. No help. Going to try to follow the wire harness up into the engine compartment to make sure nothing is wrong with the harness. If anyone has the wiring schematic from that switch I could use that to check the wires.

I should be able to get that for you, just have to go out to the garage. Shouldn’t take me more than 30 minutes unless someone gets there sooner.

I’m no wizard on these automatics but it does seem like that would prevent it from selecting a gear.

I'm looking for a better schematic but here's what I found so far.

Thanks again. Sorry for the late reply. Haven’t found anything yet. Been working on that and too many other things here. I’ll keep ya posted
