was looking at the new focus today b/c a friend wants one- starting trying to think about 40 mpgs on the highway, my mind can NOT comprehend that at all...

This might blow your mind, then. Back in the 90's when gas dropped to 79 cents per gallon, my daily driver was a Chevrolet Sprint. That's right, I had 48 raging horses under my right foot. I filled it up completely for $5.80. It went around 380 miles on an 8-gal. tank.

Thinking back over my personal history, I realized I've never owned a car or truck that got less than 22 MPG. A few have gotten over 40 (2 Chevy Sprints and a Hyundai Accent) but most were in the 30s. My Ranger averages 29.4 because I drive nearly all highway miles and never have anything in it but me.

The yaris the GF had would average 30mpg in town and just over 40mpg at slightly excessive hwy speeds.

We traded it in on a V8 limited Sport Trac that averages 15mpg in town and 20 hwy.... It sucks, haha. On the other hand, leadfooting my 6.0L GM company truck around with hotshot racks averages 13mpg...

i had an f-250, 4x4, long box, super cab, dual sticks (trans and transfer, not dual transfer) with a 460 in it... i got 12mpg, that was 12mpg loaded, 12mpg unloaded, 12mpg uphill 12mpg downhill, 12mpg city, 12mpg highway... the truck got... get this... 12mpg

nothing i could do to that truck made it get better or worse mileage... the few times i wheeled it though, i did get...

A friend of mine has a trucking company, I asked him once what kind of fuel mileage his trucks get, he said 5-6 mpg all the time, unloaded, loaded, pretty much all conditions like your 12 mpg F-250.

yeah, when you get into the ridiculously big motors on a smaller vehicle... they all do the same... i forget the numbers that 460 put out but it was massive for an 80's truck... i think it was something like 350 hp and 375 torque? but i could be wrong...

nothing's gonna weigh that down... i decided after about 2 days of driving, with the long box loaded up to the top of the cab, with wet clay dirt, that i should start in 1st gear, instead of second, like i normally did i was probably hauling a ton and a half of dirt... and it stayed in there for about 3 weeks before i got around to emptying it out... people made fun of me at work for it lol

Same here no matter how I drive my truck I get 10mpg all day everyday, and thats with a 2.8, was the same way before all my mods I have done to it.

how do you get 2mpg less than i did, with an engine that's almost 1/3 the size?

I have no clue, my dad got the exact same too and his was all factory except for Duraspark. Even with my truck having whats been done, both of ours did the same mileage. Mine doesnt burn black smoke when I get on it or at start up. Has plenty of power too. Ya Im running 31 inch tires with 3.73 and a TK4 tranny, but even after the tire size change, from p235 75r 15, my mileage didnt change a bit and that is compensating for my speedo telling 10mph slower, the other tires did 5mph slower. Has a manual choke on it and seeing how warm it is outside, I dont use it. I never adjusted the carb when I got it from the J/Y, has anti taper things n the screws (should have taken them off) but idles right at 800rpm and it came off a 3.8 liter.

Thing is she runs great and Im not going to touch a thing, will be my off road play toy one day.

Well, I really like my Ranger, but when I got it I only needed 2WD, now I need 4WD. The extended cab has a little space behind the seats, but not really enough for humans. Although it's a 3.0 v6, the mileage isn't any better than current v8's. It is 8 y/o, but only has 30,000 miles, so still has some value.

When gas prices jump like they have, people seem to panic and the price of F150 4WD crew cab v8's or Expeditions crashes. I figure I will wait about a month more, then trade the Ranger for a 150 or Expedition. (With a little trailer, the Expedition will cover most of what I would use the pickup for - or - the crew cab will cover most of what I would use the Expedition for)

Ideally, I can find someone with a King Ranch crew cab, living way beyond their means, who have to commute 150 miles / day to keep their job so they can try to avoid foreclosure and will happily trade even up, hoping that the difference in mileage will make their car payments.

a national survey? who the hell did they survey? did they go door to door "do you think the gas price has peaked yet?" "yeah i do"

there you have it folks, half a dozen consumers think it's peaked, so it must have peaked

As long as we have the current jackass in the oval office, we haven't seen peak gas prices yet. He wants prices as high as Europe pays. We aren't there yet.
