AOD uses a TV (throttle valve) cable only, no computer control. You can use it with a carb.

The aodE has computer control (and later 4r70w).

I noticed this little gem in the new Summit Racing catalog: Holley TPS kit for electric choke carbs, allows you to run an electronic overdrive transmission with a carb. P/N HLY-534-202 $105.95. Seems to me an easier way to run an overdrive transmission, than running a cable that needs to be adjusted.

The early AOD's are not electronic.

I think that the latter ones were called and AOD-E.

I bought an 88 Lincoln Mark VII for parts a few years ago, it had an AODE. I think (not 100% though) that the AODE lacks a speedo cable hole in the tail. And lacks the TV cable lever
