4x4 wont engage help ASAP please

have a 04 ranger auto trans. originally had no 4x4 lights coming on the dash after start up, changed 4x4cm now the light appear briefly after start up but 4x4 still wont engage, changed 4x4 switch in the dash, still not engaging, all fuses are good and in place. when turning the 4x4 switch I hear no noises like its even trying to engage. any suggestions?

It is possible that your transfer case engagement motor is not functioning. Do a search on here for 4x4 not engaging and start reading. My '96 is all electrical and mechanical, so can't help you much.

Yes, try tapping on the electric motor on the back of the transfer case, then shift, see if it changes.
The brushes in these motors get struck and lose connection to rotor, tapping can gets them loose, but if that is the case then motor needs a rebuild, look here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/TCaseshiftmotor.shtml
