4x4 indicator light not working with lights

i have a 96 ranger xlt with 4.0 ohv. my 4x4 dash indicator light works but not when i turn my headlights on or running lights on . cant seem to figure out what the headlights and indicator light would have in common. any suggestions?

I know this is a way old thread but there were no replies and I have found the same question relating to both explorers and rangers on several forums but have not seen any resolutions. My 95 is doing the same...4wd and 4wd-low indicator on the dash light up but go out if I turn on the headlights. Anyone here have any ideas??
