In my 2002 ford ranger xlt 4x4 something in the electrical system is not working. I have taken off the t-case motor to test the t-case manually and it works great. so with winter and rain coming i want to have some fun but not get stuck. It also doesnt help that some of my dash lights dont work. I just called ford and they want $85 bucks for a diagnostics. I have checked all the fuses even the one's under the hood ( idk what they are called) and their all fine. So i think its either gonna be the t-case motor or the 4x4 control module. If you guys can walk me thru how to figure out my damn problem i would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks in advance, Abel

What lights dont work?

It will either be (in order of common repairs)
1. Bad motor
2. Bad 4x4 control module (really just two simple relays mounted in a black box, but its worth $100 instead of 2 $5 relays, goooo Ford!)
3. Bad BCM (body control module)

Our trucks 4x4 died, cleaned and then replaced the motor while the 4x4 module was still clicking away, then it stopped clicking at all. Tried a used 4x4 relay and nada. Tested the BCM according to the service manual and it was bad, wound up finding one at the junkyard and its working great now!

Do you head any clicking in the dash when you turn the switch? If you do, then its probably the motor.

If you dont hear anything, then its the relay module or BCM.

Some of my dash light dont work such as the ones that light up the gas gauge and 4x4 high and low. No i dont hear anything when i turn the switch

Ok so i got it checked out by my trusty mechanic yesterday and he checked everything and came to the conclusion that it is the 4x4 control module. I just wanted to be sure that was it. He said that when they are operational, you can hear a tick when you flip the switch for 4x4 high and low. Now i can't hear no ticking. Also i am going to order one do i have to have a specific one or will any that say for a 2002 ford ranger 4.0l 4x4 do the job?
Thanks, Abel

Any 4x4 module for the 2002 and up ranger will work. They started using a stand alone
4x4 module in 2002 I believe but am not absolutely sure of the year. Before that they controlled it with the GEM. BTW it's behind the passenger kick panel if you haven't located it yet and yes, it is a very common problem on 2002 and newer rangers and explorers. I've replaced tons of them.

Yes i have found it. I took my stock one off because i read some where that they have a reset button but i did not locate the button. i am guessing it was on an earlier model but idk. FML! Good thing i have good friends that are lending me money to buy it!
