4r44e problem

I just put a u pull it 4r44e in my truck since the old one died. Before the old one went completely the "o/d off" light was flashing. This new one is shifting fine until I get about 40MPH (or into overdrive?) then that o/d off light starts flashing. After it comes on when I decrease speed to a stop and start going again 1st gear shifts hard, but once I turn the truck off and back on (and the o/d off light turns off it shifts like butter. The shifter on my truck has tons of slack and flops around a bit. Is it possible the o/d mechanism in the shifter is cause it to go into some kind of "limp home" mode? I am very broke right now and cant afford to have the codes read at a transmission shop. Any suggestions? Have to drive this truck no matter what so parking it till I figure it out is impossible. The Houston heat is too much to continue riding my bicycle to work now. Suggestions other than "get the code read"? much appreciated.

Slop in your shifter is very unlikely to be the issue. There isn't an "o/d mechanism" as I think you are understanding it.

There seems to be an issue with the transmission's ability to go into over drive. Once it tries and fails it does go into a limp mode though. Once the power is cycled it will work properly until it sees the problem again.

The easiest and cheapest short-term fix is to hit the OD cancel button every time you hop in. If it never tries to go into over drive it should never see the problem.

thank you for the reply. The "o/d cancel" is the button on the end of the shifter? I tried to do that and it does nothing. before the o/d off light comes on I have pushed the o/d button on the end of the shifter and it turns on and off...but is unresponsive once that o/d off light turns on. Is there another cancel button somewhere?

No, that's the button I am talking about. Hit it when you first start the truck.

Ok I tried it today and it seems to work. So I have narrowed it down to the overdrive being messed up, but I can at least drive safely for now. thanks for the help. Sometimes you have to have people point out a very simple "fix" that should been done right away. hah

Can I safely drive 70MPH without overdrive? I rebuilt the entire top of the engine so it is strong...but I don't want to be screaming down the road at 70 if I don't have to. Is there technically a 4th gear if there isn't a overdrive? I wish all vehicles cam with tachometers...:icon_confused:

It is a 4-speed over drive transmission. 4th gear is the over drive, so no, you won't be going into 4th gear. You will be limited to 3rd, which is still direct drive. It'd be like driving a stick but never going into 5th.

I would not stay at 70 for extended periods. I'd probably try to limit myself to 55.

No Bueno. Light started flashing again today. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this without actually pulling a code?

Hi. Did you ever get the OD light flashing, no overdrive problem fixed? I have the same problem, 4r44e trans, 180K. I had it rebuilt at about 120K. I don't want to rebuild again as the cost would be worth more then truck.
thanks.

I have this same issue..
