4bt swap -- 95 Explorer

If you have any plans at all of buying a new Escape I'd hurry up and get one of the 2012 models or wait 3 years.

2013 is supposed to be a total redesign, and you know how new model launches are.

Thanks, I heard about it. We wont be buying a 1st year production of anything, thats for sure! I've read enough about the new Ex, and the Altima was a first year too. :annoyed:

Yeah, Not only do we have to buy a new car, but T-giving morning the power started flickering. Long story - short, We spent $1100 to have the main breaker panel replaced. :annoyed:

I wont really be able to get back into this until after the holidays. I figure I will be able to do a little more work to the engine... cleaning, painting, ect... but thats about it for now.

OK, Its time to get back to this.
Holidays are over.
Wifes happy in her new car. 2012 Fusion.
The Altima sold within 3 hours of putting it on CL.

I spent the day researching and ordering parts.

-Borla XR1 3" in/out muffler.
-DEI Titanium turbo blanket and heat wrap.
-New 12cm exhaust housing for my hx35 turbo.
-Full stainless steel, pipes, clamps, hangers, etc... everything to build my exhaust system.
-Denny T level II fuel pin

I also emailed Hamilton cams to order a 181/210 cam.

I'm thinking that my combo will net me around the 200 HP level and 450 ft-lbs. (Maybe more, I'm learning as I go on diesel performance. )

This is such a cool swap. I can't really think of a more desirable engine, if it can really get the fuel mileage that you expect it to, at this performance level. I love my little diesel tempo, this will be so much cooler.

Ill be watching this one, good luck getting it all together.

are you planning to do injectors to? i am thinking of sending mine down to scott at TN conversion and let him upgrade them to a +50hp injector. i dont think i can hit 200+ w/o injectors since im still stock cam

I got a set of stock injectors from a 1st gen 6bt on the way. I dont know if I'm going to send them to Scott or the rebuilder we use at work.

I've heard mostly good things about Scott, but we've been using this rebuilder for 30 years. They are local, I know their work and trust it. Once I have the injectors, I'll stop by the shop and talk to them.

I'll let you know after I talk to them.

laws on engine swap

I live in new jersey and from my information an engine swap can only be of the same
cid because of emission law anyone got any idea if it's true. tried to call dot. forget
about it can't get through..

Most states don't care WTF you do if you switch fuel types, and the 3.9 Cummins is roughly the same in displacement as what his Explorer had factory, a little smaller actually. Most engine swap laws concerning displacement say "same CID or less".

Plus unless you have a roughly 2008 or newer diesel you have no emissions. Or if you go propane you don't have the emissions issue either. However propane has less pollutants produced so it doesn't really matter.

Sent from the road while ignoring traffic

Same can be said for a properly tuned diesel.

The following vehicles are exempt from inspection requirements (N.J.A.C. 13:20-7.2):

* Diesel-fueled motor vehicles having a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or more that are required to be inspected by the owner or lessee.
* All diesel powered vehicles model year 1996 and older that are plated passenger, not for profit, governmental, commuter van , farmer or farm truck except buses.
* All diesel powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) 8,501 to 9,999 that are plated passenger, not for profit, governmental, commuter van, farmer or farm truck except buses.

I wouldnt have started this without a solid plan.

Mine a '95, so I'll be exempt from inspection.

If that doesnt work, I can register it at 10,001 lbs GVWR and self-inspect it.

If that doesnt work, I'll slap one of these inspection stickers on it. (I have them at work.)

If that doesnt work, I can buy a sticker for $150.

8600 is enough for self inspect, but trooper didnt even question my gvwr when i got stopped for no sticker. LEGALLY they go by what is on the stick on the door/jam n not what your reg says. but unless you piss of the cop then i doubt they would hassle you much over it.

Legally, yes they do have to go by the sticker, but most cops wont even bother. They will just go by the registration.
