Question...

My 460 will not start when hot. It cranks a few times, slowly, and then nothing. When theengine is cold it cranks just fine, and after it sits for a 1/2hr or so after running it will start, but if i shut it off to get gas or something ater its been ran a while it will not start....

Last time i noticed the starter smoking? The truck used to do something similar to this and then it kinda fixed itself, now its doing it again....i havent touched the timing, and the battery cables get super hot when it starts doing this...

Im stumped...i heard it could be the started getting to hot? I do have headers on it...

Check or replace your negative cable from the battery to the engine.

I got a big fat like 2 gauge wire on the negative side, and i replaced the terminal on that side and only was able to get like maybe an 1/8 of the total wires in the terminal, i rigged it up this morning with some longer bolts so all the wire would make contact...but when i took off the couple of wires that were on it they were like welded to the terminal??? I havent got a chance to see if it fixed it yet, were gonna drive it to the ol ladys famillys house for thanksgiving so ill see what it does then....maybe that fixed it?

I didnt put to much stock into the wires/teminals cause i figured that would make it act up cold also??

Next time you drive it and shut it off and it starts slow. After you crank it see if the negative wire is hot to the touch. Becareful not to burn yourself as they can get pretty hot.

what year of 460 dustin? when my 79 did that it was the reluctor and magnetic pick up inside the distributor....... spent nearly $1000 chasing that problem because 6 different mechanics said it could not possibly be the magnetic pick up because they don't go bad.......... it did it again when the timing chain jumped 1 tooth, slight adjustment to the timing and it started fine warm.

could also be the starter going bad.... 460s chew them up like candy, I finally replaced it with a high torque model meant for a diesel.... had to change the nose cone to fit the 460 and use the biggest fattest wire I could find from the battery to the starter.

My 460 in my boat did the same thing. It would barely crank over and was a biatch to start. I replaced the starter ($45) and it turns over amazingly...like night and day difference. I've heard of headers ruining starters from their temp but not sure how true that is.

My vote goes to the wiring and/or starter. If it doesn't already have, put in a heat shield. A piece of sheet metal with an air space between the headers and starter.

The valve covers says its a 79....the truck is an 89, It has the 80's style Vbelt/serptine looking belts, but it is carburated (converted from efi).

The starter is only like 2 weeks old, I just had the flywheel replaced and the starter was replaced then, however it is a cheapo valucraft starter.

It still is starting hard after i fixed the negative cable.....Im gonna buy some header wrap and try that....BDAB...was there any other symptoms of the distributor going bad? Cause it still runs like a top, it just wont start....

My buddy said it might be vaporlock? Ive never had one vaporlock on me so im not sure the symptoms....? I also thought that only made it not wanna fire, not that it would make it not crank....

uuummmmmwhen it gets to the point where it takes 2 hours to restart it ........ I carried electronics chilling spray and hosed down the cap and coil when it did this. try that...... spraying down the coil and cap with co2...... get it cold when it starts acting up.... if this works ... sure sign of a bad dizzy...... or coil.

Im hoping i got it figured out....i had to pull the starter to wrap the headers and i went and got the starter tested, it filled autozones little test box with smoke and the gear only kicked bout halfway out, so i got another one (4th one now under warrenty) and wrapped the headers, hopefully (crosses fingers) this takes care of it, i havet drove it and got it hot yet, but i am praying.

thanks yall.

You should have the batt checked for available cranking amps too. Besides the heat from the headers killing the starter, low amps will finish it off. I always ran a 1000 CA for big blocks.:icon_thumby:

Well, the new starter did the trick, drove it for a half hr (after i wrapped headers), shut it off, fired right back up like a champ.

I got a cheapo Advanced auto parts battery in it, but i had it tested to and it tested good.
