I've been throwing round the idea of putting a 4.6 in my 95 but everyones telling me to put a 5.0 there bout great motors but really like the new age set up and will the 4.6 fit I got a/c if that matters

The 4.6 is a superior engine from an engine standpoint, however they don't fit in a TTB Ranger worth a darn.

A late model 96-01 Explorer is pretty advanced, probably fairly close to being on par with a older 4.6.

If they fit, I would have dropped a 5.4 in mine with much eagerness.

I thought about putting a 4.6 out of a wrecked Crown Vic that I could have got for practically nothing in my 84, but with a little measuring I found that it would not fit without EXTENSIVE modifications to the truck. It is just too wide of an engine to fit in the engine bay easily. It would directly interfere with the steering shaft and probably the brake booster too. Not to mention if the oil pan would fit around the crossmember or not.

That was what I needed to know now I know y everyone gets a 5.0 I really want to but its a dream in the making just lines on a piece of paper

folks have stuffed 5.8s, 6.0s, 7.3s, 7.5s in there, just to name a few. if you want to run a 4.6 or a 5.4, do it. is it going to be bolt on, no. is it possible, absolutely!

Dont know if I want to go that deep have to do some hunting for some motors and a 5sp for it

Even though it's a smaller displacement, it's MUCH larger than the 5.0L. Size is the main drawback.

Even 5.0's are kind of a pain without a body lift.

if you want to see exactly how much modification it takes, look into project "rolling thunder" on Trucks! on spike. they go through the mods step by step and show just how much work it really is.

That was on a later truck though, so it would be easier on that one.

Anything will fit if you have sawzall and a welder.

this is true.(who said that,anyway?)

this one, though, takes a lot of sawzall/welder work.i set about doing just this swap and the first thing i found was that the frame is simply too narrow for the 4.6 to fit between the rails.i got around this by cutting out the front crossmember and widening the frame 4'' at the front.this barely allowed the starter and exhaust to fit between the rails, and while still tight, the steering box was workable.

a new crossmember was built and body mounts relocated, but firewall and severe heater mods were needed.

this one was a challenge.

The 5.0 fits so well because of the piston angle. It's a 60* engine like the 2.9 and so the clearance issues, while still there, are much less than with a 4.6, which has a larger piston angle and wider heads to accommodate the fact that it is an overhead cam design. This puts the apex width of the engine much wider than the old pushrod 5.0s.

Uhhh, no...

60 degree 2.8 (basically the same on the outside as a 2.9), and a 90 degree 302 on the right. The outside of the heads are angled which helps with fitment and throws off the look of the 90 degree engine a little, but it is 90 degree.

Long story short, just like every other OHC engine the 4.6 plain and simple has huge heads. The one here is a DOHC so it is a little bigger than your normal SOHC but not a whole lot.

Yea I believe the 5.0 is where im going to go that's just too much for me it was a good thought but the 5.0 will be the power plant for mine as well

Bolt-in swap for the most part... Not sure why it would be a pain without a body lift? Mine wasn't.
