4.6 vs 5.0

this is true.(who said that,anyway?)

look at my sig :D

i would avoid a 4.6 in a ranger unless your willing to do major mods, you would have better luck stuffing a 460 in there... the ranger was designed for skinny inline 4's and 60 degree v-6's, not the obese 4.6

Yep, that 4.6 is a much more advanced motor but a lot more complicated. Little long video of the timing chain removal on the 4.6, don't think it's this hard on a push rod motor. Changing the cams is also a nightmare.

almost forgot about maintinence, your gona have a fun time working on that shoe-horned 4.6 if ya get it in!

In some ways I think my 302 is easier to work on than my 2.8 was.

If I changed some things (like I plan to) it will be in many more ways too.

I know what working on them is like I would take a 4.6 timing over a escape 3.0 there a pain in he a$$ but I can do it with my eyes closed now thanks to my moms escape 302 is where im going I think I just found a 4.0 out of a 97 explore. Bout a hour ago so now im all up in the air cause I drive the truck almost everyday

This topic just got me dreaming about heart transplants into rangers again. Wikipedia helps sort out the specs, too.

Now, I just need to find a Lincoln MkVIII LSC, Explorer, Maurauder, or Navigator to get a solid 4.6L DOHC 300hp/300tq donor...

*le sigh*

i actually found changing the cams is fairly easy once you get all the stuff in the way of the cam covers pulled back.the trick here is that you can unbolt the cam sprocket and pull the cam out without disturbing the timing chain, although you have to be very carefull.
i support the sprocket with a 1/2'' drive extension or similar metal rod, then slide the new cam in the same way the old one came out.much easier than on a pushrod engine.

timing chains,ya-that's an ugly one.

Forget that, I am dreaming of an DOHC 5.0. Someday in the fairly near future they will be common to find too. :yahoo:
