4.6 Dohc Swap

I've been wanting to do this for a while but have yet to come across one for a decent price. Still searching.

This whole project started with my new 93 Mark VIII having a noisy valvetrain last year. I thought the engine was not going to last long, so I found a 94 Mark VIII locally for $600. I was going to replace the engine, but the more I researched it appeared other cars also have this noise and others have driven them that way. So I didn't need the engine and was deciding what I could put it in. In the meantime I got a 98 drivetrain from a friend and that's how it all started. I will keep the 94 engine just in case my 93 tanks.

Well got the engine and tranny out of the Mazda last week. Now time to get the 4.6 ready to go in.

Greg: How did you make the motor mount brakets, did you put the engine in and tack weld the plate or did you measure them???? Thanx

Well finally had some time to work on it this weekend, but it was a bit warm so didn't get as much done as I wanted. I found a block for pretty cheap and I already had a striped tranny, so it made the fitting aspect much easier this way. Should have the mounts done this week and hopefully have the engine in soon.

sweet, im debating a 5.0 or 4.6. ill be watching your thread.

Update

Well I got the engine in today, went relatively smooth. Also been working on the floor shifter and the trans cross member. I'm still amazed that this engine actaully fits in there. There is about a 1/4" clearance on the waterneck from the control arm mount.

i also am in the process of doing this swap its good to see more people doing it.

Lookin good. Take lots of pics and post lots of details!

i was wondering if your putting a stick in it?

I'm not using a stick, will be using the Mark VIII transmission. Plan on doing the J-mod, new filter and fluid to the transmission. The 98 tranny's in the marks were the best, they got quite a few upgrades from the previous gen. transmissions.

Update

Here are a few updates on the happenings with the Mazda.

Got the heater box done and installed, fabricated some metal welded it together and JB welded the joints to the box.

Also been working on the wiring, trying to build a harness out of the truck first. It's been a bit difficult as Ford ran wires off in different directions. I have been re-pinning and moving wires around to make it appear clean looking when it goes in.

Also been working on the steering almost done with it.
