i am thinking about getting 33s in the future and i was wondering what gears i should use 4:56 or 5:13 we have a lot of hills around hear and i want to be able to go up hills in 4th and cruse at highway speed in 5th without reving to high i have an 88 2.9 ranger ext cab 5speed manual. give me your thoughts:icon_thumby:

With 33s, I'd go in the middle and use 4.88.

I concur.

I had 4.56 and 33's with a 2.9, and it needed to be a tad lower.

Agreed. I've got 31s with 4.56s and with 33s I'd probably want 4.88s.

5.13s would be good for 35s I might even go a little lower if possible, as for 33s if you like cruising in 4th the 4.88s will work great, if you drive mostly highway then I would go 4.56s for better fuel economy

well i have 31's with 3:73s right now. Also if i want to get 5:13s and 35's would i want to swap in an 8.8 or could i leave the 7.5 i dont want to do a swap if i dont have to so can i leave the 7.5

Yes, 5.13 for 35s.

now can i keep my 7.5 if i want the 5.13's and 35's

I'm not sure if 5.13s are still made for the 7.5, but either way You would want to upgrade to the 8.8 (and definitely the D35 if you haven't already). The pinion on the 7.5 is pretty small with deep gears and has been known to break.

Agreed. You have 2 options here. Either go with the 8.8, or beef up the 7.5 with new shafts and so forth. Stock, the 7.5 is a "cute" axle. It works fine for stock, up to 35s with some upgrades. But, you'll find out that new shafts and the work you'll put in, will cost you just as much as an 8.8 in good condition. Plus, the 8.8 has a wider range of ring and pinion availability, in case you decide to go with a lower ratio.

Its prolly cheaper to find an 8.8 and regear that rather than regearing, and beefing up the weak 7.5, I actually sheered two teeth off the pinion on my 7.5 and I was running 3.73s and 31s, and i did the 8.8 swap and it only cost me bout 500 bucks

i belive both 4.56 and 5.13 gears have been discontinued for the 7.5 i would deffinitely go for 8.8 anyway if you could get them gears

Recommend 4.88s for 35s. 5.13s are just a little too deep for highway cruising if you're running 35s.

The 4.56s I have are a little deep for the highway with 31s, but not bad. It's a big jump to 35s, I'd definitely go with 5.13s.
