4.0l SOHC tuning clippings and notes

Factory base (open loop) maps for the SOHC.

4.0l SOHC tuning clippings and notes

HP Tuners Base tune for a 2011 4.0l SOHC. You will need this if you accidently overwrite your ECM with a botched/modified tune.

Truck is a 2011 4.0l, 4wd, manual transmission. Strategy PYGP1A7

DO NOT BLINDLY OVERWRITE YOUR ECM WITH THIS. CHECK STUFF FIRST. DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES, ETC.

Edit: Ok mod people, how do I upload this?

Interesting email exchange this morning.

Spoke with Przemyslaw Jaworski of V Performance in Poland (http://v-performance.pl/), and he has tuned SOHC rangers in the past. He said the moddbox kit with 3.5 lb of boost on 87 is entirely possible, and he's willing to take on the work for €500. Seems reasonable to me.

It also occurred to me last night that I still have my old SCT tuner with a bunch of 5 star tunes in my parts room. Going to re flash my current tune to theirs, and pull the data back off the truck to see what their maps look like. I remember the tunes themselves being entirely useless, but curiosity has gotten the best of me.

I guess it's good to state why I'm doing this. After seeing how wimpy the factory tune on this truck is, I want to see if I can work through the factory tuning to come up with one suitable for a bone stock engine, then work towards a boosted truck running safely on 87 octane. The nice part of this project is the only thing I'm missing at this point is time. Everything else is currently laying on my work bench - blower, install kit, wideband, tuner, etc. 🙂

Never got my truck tuned after installing the SC, got sidetracked with a manual swap.

I’ll be following along.

Clipping: extremely useful old thread on tuning a 2000 explorer with SCT.

Note: I've been driving myself crazy trying to log knock on the 4.0 SOHC. Turns out, you... sorta can't?

Cazy useful old forum post

So, turns out the generic knock PID in HP is uh... diagnostic only. Off to start a three month email chain to get HP to add knock to my ECM strategy. With any luck, they'll be able to add knock voltage and knock retard to the scan tool so I can figure out spark without detonating the poor thing.

Posterity's sake:

If you're finding this in a Google search years from now, tuning a 9.7:1 compression ratio engine with cast pistons without knowing if and when it's responding to knock is a really bad idea.

If you can gain access to the knock counts and knock retard response, however, then it's safe to experiment with spark and fuel, while still allowing the pcm to pull timing. Blindly disabling knock retard and tuning by ear like I did with my 2.9? Not a great idea, engine won't take it.

Quick note on AFR:

SOHC has global AFR set to 14.68... ideal when gas was gas, but not now. Most fuel in PA is E10, some are now E15... E10 stoich is 14.07... so possible that the computer is always going for a slightly improper AFR as a result.

Here's an ancient forum about it:

May run a few data logs after wideband install to see if there's a difference when setting globals at 14.68 vs 14.07. Not sure if there will be one other than mildly increased or decreased fuel economy. Unknown if difference in knock sensors due to current inability to read the PID.

If I can just set my global fuel command to a lower AFR and the pcm will do it accurately, I have a very clear path for running 87 octane with 3.5 psi of boost pressure - just increase fuel globally in to overcome possible knock.

I'm talking to myself in a lot of these posts and to future people googling this crap... bear with me...
