I am getting ready to use my '94 4.0. When I was driving it every day, I don't remember any significant valve train noise. However, after sitting for a while, anytime I would start it to move the truck the engine was quite noisy. I know the 4.0 is prone to rocker arm to pushrod wear.
This raises a couple of questions:
1- Could the noise just be from the lifters bleeding off while sitting? I let it run several minutes once and it never got quieter.

2-If I replace the rockers and/or pushrods, where can I get rocker shaft bolts? Since they are torque to yield and this seems to be a common issue, I would think they would be readily available. Yet I haven't been able to locate them in the aftermarket world.

Any opinions/advice from you 4.0 gurus would be appreciated.

Pushrod tip wear OR oil pressure issue (typically clogged oil pump pickup)

AD

If you replace the rockers and push rods look into a Delta Camshafts. They make replacements that have hardened tips. I replaced mine with them but still get some noise so it must be another issue.

It still registers good oil pressure on the gauge. I'll probably remove the oil pan once the engine is out anyway. I'll make sure I look at the pickup then.

Thanks for the tip Daniel. I'll look into Delta. What did you do about rocker shaft bolts?

Wasn't aware

I wasn't aware they were torque to yield ,I know the head bolts are I reused mine "Shaft bolt's" with no probs?:dunno:

That seems like a lot of design effort for a placebo. Why would Ford do that?

if the oil pressure drops below a certain point the guage drops all the way down. its really a glorified idiot light.

Because the average person is too stupid to understand that their oil pressure changes based on rpm and temp. Too many customer complaints of their oil pressure dropping at idle led to the fake gauge. It will read the same at any pressure over 7 psi.

^^ ^^
I did not know that!!!

Is there a mod one can make so the factory gauge functions as a gauge? I realize there are no numbers but position would at least be some indication of a variation. I would prefer no aftermarket gauges mounted to the dash/A pillar/steering column/etc.

Nope, it's either on or off. Aftermarket gauge is the only option.

Not true.

There is a 20 ohm resistor that needs to be jumpered on the back of the gauge cluster and change the oil pressure sender to a gauge type sender and you will have a functioning oil pressure gauge.

Thanks. That's what I was hoping for. I was going to check my wiring diagrams when I got home. Sounds like an easy fix.
