What aftermarket performance parts are availible for the 4.0?

And I know there is the obligatory K&N air intake and computer chips.

I want to know about real stuff.

For this motor there really arent many good options for performance out there that are bolt on.

Ah, that makes things a lil more difficult.

Things that will make a difference:

-Tuner
-Exhaust (no headers, proven to gain NO hp and in cases loses some ponies)
-Electric fan (only helps with parasitic loss, no actual gain)

Then there's the pricy supercharger/nitrous route.....

Electric fans are nice. And they are quiter in some cases.
I think I will have to go with a fan, pipes and an intake.

There are granatelli and other brands of MAF sensors and also bigger throttle bodies that will help with airflow.I would use headers also and with a flowmaster exhaust system. There is a reply here that suggest headers will give no power gain but on the dyno my 94 gained 18 extra horses with the exhaust system which I think is very respectable for a small motor. These motors dont seem to be horrible about being restrictive on the intake or exhaust side but you can get some power gains from playing with both.I have been told before that bolting a set of 98 heads on the early motors will get you a good power gain but it raises the compression requiring premium fuel which I will not do and most others either. It is a shame the aftermarket doesnt show much interest in the early OHV 4.0. and it is there loss. There are millions of them out there and almost as many people that would like to modify them for more power.

Hey I have a 4.0L im going to be rebuilding here soon and was looking into getting an aftermarket cam (nothing crazy just a lil more umph is what im looking for) any other suggestions as to what to replace while i have it torn apart? The engine came out of a 94 Explorer and had around 135k miles on it. The engine in the ranger I have is getting a lil tired and has a new tranny in it so i figured I would rebuild the spare engine that came with the truck and hop it up a lil (again nothing crazy just want a lil more out of it) and come fall swap it out for the old engine and have a low mile tranny with a rebuilt motor. So other than a Cam, what else should I look at replacing for hp gains? Didnt mean to jack your thread, just figured this might be a good place to ask.

I think we have chatted about this before. (this looks familiar) When you say cam, are you thinking of 410? if so it is advisable to replace the lifters also for these are rollers, then prepare for new push rods. After you have it running again be prepared for your motor to spin faster, and if you get CEL codes don't be all to panicked. I finally had to just ignore the codes i was getting after my build, after replacing half the sensors in the motor. What I figured that happened was the CAM, and valves reset themselves over daily driving and I don't get any codes now. I was thrown into a headspin for a while trying to get rid of that CEL. I am still going to be getting headers, new rockers, and a larger TB eventualy some time this year to just add a bit more. (when other projects get finished as time and cash allow) If you do rebuild budget in for new hoses, thermastat, plugs, wires. this helps to eliminate future problems. (one other thing to replace is the back main seal) cheers

Thanks for the info Angie, Thats what I was looking at possibly going with was a 410, Im mechanicly inclined but I have never torn a 4.0 apart and rebuilt it. I have helped tear down and rebuild a suburu 2.2 and a chevy 350 but not a 4.0L. Also this will be the first Engine I have rebuilt my self so i will probluby be asking ALOT of questions when i start the build. Right now Im looking at what performance parts I want to put in it then what other parts im going to need to replace and of course Im sure I will find more once the engine is torn down. Im looking at this to take a few months, I want to make sure I do it right and take my time....would not be to happy to get it done and in the truck to have it blow the engine 2 months down the road. I am looking at putting in a Cam, headers bigger Throttle body (possibly) I also plan on putting in a snorkle on the truck when I do it (if i dont do it sooner lol) because I do take my truck offroad and some times cross some deep water. As for internally, I also thought about having it bored .30 over but I need to find out what some of the local shops would charge to bore it up.

PS. And Im sure if you chatted with some one about the cam issue it wasnt me :D I have been absent from the site for a few years and I am just not getting back on :D I appreciate your responce about the cam issues, glad to know about that ahead of time.

i might be rebuilding too and so far what i have come up with is a 410 0r 422? cam i believe bigger throttle body and fuel injectors! stock are 19lbs you can move up i sugest no more that 30lbs and recommend 24lbs wet.if your rebuilding a push rod your gonna want new rods for sure and it would be best to bore out the block a small bit and buy new pistons. im just saying if you want performance go all out with what you can find and do before you put the sucker back in.
