I'm new here first time posting I'm swapping a 4.0 from a 97 Ranger 2 wheel drive automatic into a 1990 2.9 2 wheel drive 5 speed.the 4.0 is complete with all harnesses dash and engine along with ecm.my question is if anyone done the swap with similar years and what I need to do for the harnesses on it. Do I need to swap clusters aswell or engine harness? I know ill have to swap the ecm for a manual transmission one, other than that what needs to be spliced or will direct connect or possibly 2 harness in the truck. Any help is greatly appreiciated.

Have you taken a good look at the tech library here? It has some very good info on doing what you want with your Ranger.

Yes ive looked through it, i guess my question really is can i use the harnesses that came with the 4.0 automatic transmission and just swap the ecm with one from a manual ? Any differences in the harness?

a couple connections will need to be made. I think it is the PRNDL switch mostly

Going from a 90 to a 97 is going to cross a few barriers that cause issues, such as the OBDII and the firewall redesign making it hard to bolt the new dash in or plug the new harness into the old dash.

The cam sensor also changed in 95, stem size and plug changed. A 90-92 engine and harness would have been a better choice.

thanks for the input, so since the 97 harness is a issue could i pick up a harness a early 90s harness and ecm for 4.0 and run it on the 97 motor? And changes besides the cam sensor?

Yes, when you go to the junkyard, take note of your intake and the early 90's intake, sensor placement may be different. If it is, grab the intake as well...

Thanks everyone for the help. There seems to be not to much info on 4.0 from a newer ranger into the 90 i have, so ill be taking pictures as i go along and try to note any issues and everything i have to do. As it is right now my truck has the 2.9 in it with a 5 speed and i have a 4.0 from a 97 ranger automatic sitting in the shop. The 4.0 came with engine harness and dash harness all accessories full exhaust and a spare wiring harness, im going to try and get a 90 engine and console harness to see if itll be pretty much a direct plug in and make everything easier otherwise im going to get a newer harness from a manual transmission ranger and try splicing everything in to work with my dash. Ill keep everyyhing updated as i go along any further comments or ideas are appreciated

I just completed putting a 97 4.0 from an Explorer into a 92 Ranger that had a 4.0 automatic in it.

I used the intake and harness from the 92 and had no problems at all. The 92 does not have a cam sensor. The injectors get their signal from the crankshaft position sensor. Just use the motor mounts from the 2.9 exhaust manifolds because the 90 does not have an EGR and you will be fine. I don't expect a problem with the manual trans because the automatic in the 92 of mine does not get signals from the EEC. Also you will want to use the injectors from the 4.0 . Hope this helps .Any questions feel free to ask. Terry

If you get a 90s upper intake block the exhaust manifold egr port and grab a 90-92 4.0 harness it will plug and play!!!! I found another one the other day at my pick a part yard!!! 91 harness Which has me thinking I need to grab that for my 89 b2.. Maybe I can pull it and ship it for the right price? I think the 90-92 ranger harnesses are like gold for 4.0 swaps
the upper intake parts are easily obtained in the massive amount of early 91-93 explorers in the junkyard

Ok so basically what your saying is if i take the 97 4.0 and put it in my 90 ranger 2.9 all i need to do is get the inake pieces and wiring harness/ecm from a 90-92 ranger or exploree and it will be a direct plug in? And my other issue is it needs to pass a smog ref so cant have any codes.

Ok i found a 92 ranger 4.0 manual is 4wd though the ecm should be fine though right its all on a differnt system? And the harness and intake parts ill take from it aswell?

Ok now im really worried here. Just found out the 4.0 i have is a sohc. It has the 8 bolt flywheel so it cant be a ohv right? Got the harness and upper intake stuff from the 92 ranger but now worried if transmissions gona bolt up still gotta get different flywheel and clutch and what else do i need to do different now?

Late build OHV engines had the 8-bolt crank.

Also, it has been quite well proven that the SOHC can be bolted to an OHV trans, plugged into, and run by OHV harnesses and electronics. The only issue is that the cam sensor is different.

Ok yea i popped the valve covers and i got a ohv. I have the harness and ecm out of a 92 4.0 now 4wd dont think it matters for 2wd. So basically i should be able to bolt on the upper intake use92 harness and ecm and dhould all plug in and work right? Now i just need to get another flywheel and clutch. But what about the cam sensor? Do i just leave it in nothing pluged into it since the 92 harness doesnt have that on it? And is it.just a knock sensor since timing comes from the crank sensor?
