4.0 swap help

Ok have my engine figured out. Now the transmission. I planned on using my 2.9 transmission. Its the fm145 my question is how is the ft lutch set up going to work. Since my motor came from a automatic i had to order a flywheel and since its the 8 bolt, while i was ordering this i was looking at clutch kits and they where seperated by years. Such as 90-92 93-96 97-2000. Whats the difference in the clutches when all the flywheels were the same? And is my transmission going to work with the 8 bolt flywheel? im not worried about milling a spot for pilot bearing if need be. But am i just wasting time? Should i be looking for a different transmission

Alright i lied. Its a fm132 and im not done with questions on the motor yet either. Before i throw it all in there everything should work fine using the 92 4x4 4.0 harness and ecm in my 2wd 90 ranger with that 97 4.0 right? I have all the upper intake parts from the 92 4x4 aswell. I just didnt plan on hooking up any of the 4x4 stuff it should run with out and codes right?

I'm not sure about the clutch basket and flywheel on the later model 4.0 ohv, I would think they would be the same thickness
But I'm not sure here

Measure your stock flywheel and pressure plate from the back side of flywheel to the pressure plate teeth

If the measurement of the old is the same as the 97-2000 it should be the same
If not you might have to switch out, throwoutbearings and clutch slave cylinders to the later style

You do know that a 4.0 will shred and FM trans, right?

Yeah 4x4 stuff won't throw codes, there is only a light on the dash that is illuminated when in 4x4 which is sent from the tcase not the computer, on electronic shift 4x4 there is a seperate controler for 4x4

as long as you have everything plugged in on the 92 harness, you shouldn't throw any codes. With the 92 intake
As long as you get he emissions stuff tested as a 92 ranger with 4.0 it should be on par, I'm not familiar with the emissions testing stuff as I'm in MI, where people tune their diesels to blow black smoke, lol

But everything should work out, good luck and let us know how that flywheel thing goes

Hopefully someone can chime in about flywheel and slave cylinder/ transmission applications

Adsm08 that's not entirely true, mine is holding up just fine behind the 4.0ohv, for now,
I can squeal tires thru 3rd gear on wet pavement with 3.45sand stock tires, I've also towed cars on the tow dolly and haven't had a problem.
I can hit 90 on the highway without a squeal or whine,
I think it has a lot to do with how hard you like to drop the clutch.

I can believe that. Along with which clutch it is you drop. 2.9 clutch just slips. Also previous abuse/neglect of the transmission, mileage, and build quality of your particular transmission. (Varies pretty significantly based on tolerances in the factory)

Just looking at the torque ratings: It WILL fail. How long are you willing to risk it? I'm at 9 months right now, but mine was supposedly rebuilt just before I got the truck. I'm also on the lookout for a M5OD.

Ok so i do construction in ca so winter is just now hitting and im finally getting time to work on this, pulled the 2.9 today and started stripping 4.0 for semi rebuild gaskets mainly and cleaning it up. I an going to swap to a different transmission so if any one wants to sell a m5od let me know. Alao im just going to scrap all my 2.9 stuff unless any one wants to buy it. Have everything, performance chip for 2.9 have to blocks one minus heads and one with world products heads on it, and all kinds of random things, head parts accessories etc. Any way heres some pics of how it is so far. Ill get alot more into detail when the 4.0 is going in.

Is the m5od a direct bolt in swap for the fm132? Same mounts, driveline etc? Not worried about the shifter being a couple inches off

If your 2.9l engine is running I would recommend selling it used on CL it's hard to find a decent running one nowadays, I put my old one on CL for 150 and it sold in 2 days, and I kept getting calls. For the following 2 weeks saying they'd double my asking price. Ouch I should put it up for 250$

I believe the m5od dropped right in in place of the fm 146 no drive shaft swap needed when I did it in my old 89, just bolt up and enjoy.

Alright i could use some help now, the 4.0 is in i got a m5odr1 to replace the fm132 i had i had to take the yoke from the vehicle the tranny came in since they were different besides that it bolted right in. The 4.0 bolted in using the same mounts aswell. I have most of the wiring in but stumped on a few things. The alernator wiring im confused on and the 4.0 starter has 2 wires not 1 like the 2.9 also the water temp is on the 4.0 main harness anf the 2.9 had a separate one. Wich do i use? And i have 2 plugs i cant figure out what the hell they go to either. Ill post what wires they are in a bit. The harness is from a 92 4.0 my truck was a 90 2.9

For the temp gauge use the 2.9 wire, if your using the 2.9 headlight harness..that will keep the gauge working on the dash.

Post pics of the plugs and I can prob tell you they're still fresh and vivid in my mind
