4.0 SOHC Swap

I only have the ecm, no cluster and I don't think I have the pats module from the new motor

It's 2002 Explorer that is your donor?

There may be other ways around it so you can drive to get the keys programmed. Lemme go see what I can come up with.

Try it anyway. I know some of the late 90's vehicles had the PATS module as part of the cluster. The description and operation section from the workshop manual makes it sound like by 2002 it had been condensed down to just the antenna, the PCM, and the wires between them.

I was told it was from a 2002 but the trans it came with says 2001. Could be an early model that still was really a "2001". Is the vin on the block anywhere then I could just run it through Ford.

The trans saying 2001 doesn't mean anything. Production on the 2002 MY would have started in May of 2001. Hooking up the computer to a scanner and asking it would be the surest way to find out.

Called a local Ford dealership here, they want $700 to rekey my doors and ignition cylinder.

That sounds wrong. That sounds really really high. Like, rip off high.

I'm telling you, you don't need to re-key anything. You need to get your existing PATS keys (I am assuming your truck is so equipped) programmed to the new modules. That will cost you an hour's labor, tops.

I think my shop charges less than half an hour. Our labor rate is $75/hr and I think we only charge $35 to program a key.

You do need two programmed keys to do a "customer spare programming" but there is more than one way to skin this particular cat.

You can program an additional key with the scan tool, that does not require two programmed keys.

You can get a second key cut (and really, that isn't a bad idea).

Also, which vehicle do you only have 1 key for? The Ranger, The Explorer, or both? If you have two for the Ranger there should be no problems about two keys.

Could I just have a locksmith come out after I do the swap and have him make me a new key? Wouldn't that then be cut to my key cylinder shape and programmed for the new hardware?

If you can find a locksmith with the equipment you can do that. They are out there, but around here there aren't many of them. I dunno how it is in Sarasota.
