My SOHC engine tensioners came from the factory with no seal on the rear one and a metal seal on the front one. When I did the first replacement at 100K miles, the new OEM tensioner came with no seals. I reused the front one and used and a very small amount of silicone on the rear. They both sealed great. When I did the cam timing chain rebuild at 250K, I ordered new seals, but they were on National back order, and I didn't have time to wait. Again, I reused the front tensioner seal and put a very small amount of silicone on the rear one. At 312K miles they are still working very well.
