4.0 questions

Just because you have a older sohc does not mean they will defiantly have timing chain issues. I have seen lots of older 4.0 sohc go into the 300,000+km mark with only oil changes and plugs. But if you were going to do a swap I would go with the 302.

Why would you be so set on the SOHC. IMO the OHV is the better engine.

The biggest issue with the SOHC swap in a TTB truck is that it is tall. The oil pan is low and flat and doesn't have the deep sump in the rear, so there are clearance issues to be dealt with.

An OHV is going to be easier to make work on some levels and produces similar torque numbers to the 5.0.

The thing that would tip me in favor of the 5.0 in your case is that the 5.0 did come with a carb at one point in time, and so it is easy to find parts to carb one.

Maybe its me, but carbs are old technology. I think and prefer efi over carb any day. You don't have to adjust for elevation or climate, don't have to deal with chokes or cold starts, and you get the better fuel economy out of the two. But again, that's just my preference :icon_thumby:

Oh I completely agree. I know very little about how they even work, and you should read some of the things I have posted in response to people wanting to replace EFI systems with carbs because they "don't know how to tune EFI".

In this case though, where the carb already exists, it would be easier to just put another one in.

In this case, I would say I agree with you. But if it was me personally, I would do the efi swap with junkyard parts. The fuel tank sending unit, opening should be the same, so just the fuel lines, sending unit, and pump wiring harness would all that would be needed, not counting the motor harness...

He needs an 85+ tank to get the pump in.

I agree i like EFI too maybe thats because i went balls deep into my carb within the first few weeks of ever have even touched a vehichles motor and took me a few hours just to rebuild the damn thing, plus better HP and fuel mileage i would probaly opt for the efi 5.0 out of a splorer.

If you use the ex efi, pm me and I'll help you with the wiring. It's about as easy as wiring up a duraspark box...

Thanks man, its a ways off basics not till june then i've got about a 3 week time frame to do the 302 swap before im assigned to whatever duty comes my way. But ill definitely hit you up when i get to wiring.

Read over SVT's build thread, first post, so you can get familiar with what you need so it will go smoother for you. The only difference is the mounting plates. You can follow what I originally did or go with flat plates. But I highly recommend using the stock 2.9/4.0 rubber mounts over the mustang convertible mounts, less work going that route...
