Has anyone ever custom ordered hardened pushrods for their rig to keep them from wearing down on the ends? If so where at and how much did they run ya.

Just get the rocker arm kit from Delta Camshafts - has everything you need for a decent price.

Has anyone here done it? I'd love to get rid of the valve noise that I assume is my pushrod/rocker interface. What else do I need. Valve cover gaskets, anything else? Any special tools? Other than the valve covers do I need to remove anything else?

1992 4X4 with A/C and A4LD.

I ordered a set for my 3.0 after installing the "Roller Rockers, that fit a 3.0" Give Smith Brothers a call, they did a custom length, hardened set for me & it was less than $90 shipped & only took 2 days to get them. Great guys to deal with.

The pushrods are a symptom, not the cause.

The rockers are the problem

Harder pushrods would simply eat through the rocker sockets.

I've always wanted to use a dremel and make a sort of funnel to
channel the oil to the pushrod socket from the top....

AllanD...Could you explain what your talkin about please? I haven't took mine apart yet but would like to know what I'm doing when i fix it. Where exactly would you grind on the rocker arm?

If I do this my plan is to replace both. I was looking on the Autozone web site technical data and they say I have to remove part of the intake manifold to get the valve cover off? Is that right? How do the pushrods come out? Just pull on them? Any sense on changing the lifters?

its just the upper part of the intake. I know you have to remove the rocker arms to get the pushrods out but thats it... You gotta take the heads off to change lifters.

Ok, first myth to dispel, unlike a small block chevy the pushrods
don't supply oil to the valvetrain. they have solid ends.

The pushrod socket in the UNDERside of the rocker is fed oil from
a small hole in the top of the rocker.

They depend on spash oil to (hopefully) find that small hole and
lubricate the pushrod tip.

My thought was turning that small square edged hole into a
sort of "funnel" to try to gather oil into the pushrod socket
couldn't hurt...

The aftermarket solution is to mill out the pushrod socket and
press or weld in a hardened cup so that the rocker arm doesn't
start to break up the fragments of which gall/abrade the pushrod tip

I took a look under the hood and this looks like a PIA. It even looks like I'd have to move the A/C compressor to get a line out of the way of the left valve cover, and the right side is pretty well buried.

So...........

Does this have to be fixed? The sound is just a nuisance for 30 seconds after I start it from cold.

no this doesn't need to be fixed, as in it isn't truely "broken", however with that said, if you do decide to pull the rocker arms off and replace the push rods/rockers remember that you will want to have a torque wrench handy for you will need to torque down the rails in stages and in a certain order. (can't think of how off the top of my head).

Clattering for "30 seconds after you start" is NOT worn pushrods.

that's a lifter that's bleeding down when the engine is off.
It's rare, but meaningless.

Frankly? as tightassed as I am about some stuff on my truck my way of dealing with that would be to leave the stereo turned up when I shut the truck off so the noise would stop while I reached to turn the volume down.

The pushrod clatter is bad when the engine is cold, but NEVER
entirely goes away...
